2-2 Activity: Hospital Comparison
This paper is a comparison of Ascension Genesys Hospital and McLaren Flint Hospital.
These hospitals are approximately 10 miles away from each other and are two of the three
hospitals located in or within 10 miles of Flint, Michigan. Both hospitals are acute care hospitals,
with an overall star rating of two stars from the Medicare.gov Hospital Compare site
(
Medicare.gov
2023). Ascension Genesys and McLaren Flint are relatively comparable to one
another overall when comparing the key indicators of complications, deaths, and readmissions.
National Benchmark
Comparing Ascension Genesys and McLaren Flint to the national benchmark in
complications, both hospitals were considered "No different than the national rate"
(
Medicare.gov
2023), but when broken down, there were minor differences. In the rate of
complications for hip/knee replacement patients, the national benchmark is 3.2%. Ascension
Genesys reported 4.4%, with a number of 156 patients included, whereas McLaren Flint included
200 patients and reported 3.2%. Looking at serious complications, Ascension Genesys is at .76,
and McLaren Flint is at .95, with the national benchmark at 1.0; again, both hospitals are
considered no different than the national average, but there are minor differences. In comparing
deaths among patients with serious treatable complications after surgery, the national benchmark
is 143.04, McLaren Flint reports at 117.20, and Ascension Genesys at 176.08. Continuing to look
at key indicators, death rates for heart attack patients show again that both hospitals are
comparable to the national benchmark of 12.6%, with Geneys at 12.2%
with 154 patients
included and McLaren showing slightly better at 11.9% with 246 patients included. There is a
more notable difference between the two hospitals and the national benchmark in the comparison
of readmission rates. The readmission rate for heart attack patients at McLaren Hospital is 17%,
3
which is worse than the national result of 14%. Asencion Genesys reported 14.2% of heart attack
readmission patients. The return days for heart attack patients at McLaren were also higher at
48.6, whereas Genesys is at 16 days (
Medicare.gov
2023).
Overall, both Ascension Genesys and McLaren Flint hospitals are comparable to the
national benchmarks, with each hospital having slightly better or worse numbers when looking at
the key indicators broken down by categories. The standout indicator is the readmission rates,
where Ascnencion Genesys was better overall(
Medicare.gov
2023).
Improvement Opportunity
According to the data, McLaren Flint Hospital has an opportunity to improve its
readmission rates. Overall readmission for McLaren is at 15%, with the national benchmark at
14.6%
(
Medicare.gov
2023)
, but when broken down by medical condition, McLaren Flint has
areas it can improve. Readmission for heart attack patients and their return days is higher for
patients at McLaren Flint. The data indicates the readmission rate at McLaren for heart attack
patients is 17%, and those that are readmitted to McLaren will stay on average 48.6 days
(
Medicare.gov
2023). Readmission for heart attack patients and their length of stay is an area to
watch for performance improvement.
External Factors
Speculating on external factors that may influence the data of McLaren Flint Hospital in
regards to readmission rates for heart attack patients, the patient demographic for the area
McLaren is located, patients have a higher poverty rate and unemployment rate in comparison to
the county of Genesee and the state of Michigan
(
Community Health Needs Assessment and
Implementation Strategy
2023). Flint, Michigan, has a higher homeless population, and studies
show that homeless patients have a higher readmission rate to the hospital (Saab et al., 20216).

Also, many patients do not have primary care physicians and utilize the hospital for their medical
needs. Due to the lower income of the community, patients do not spend money on medical
needs unless it is urgent or emergent. The community's demographic may account for the higher
readmission rates for McLaren Flint Hospital.
Additional Data
Additional data needs to be collected before suggesting improvement at McLaren Flint
Hospital. The data already collected on readmission rates from Medicare indicates an area of
improvement in heart attack patients. Data on staffing, patient education, and the patient's ability
to follow up with a primary care physician would be necessary to make credible suggestions for
performance improvement to reduce the readmission of heart attack patients and the length of
stay after readmission.
