Public Health Campaigns could refer to engagements that are done either through the mass media or community engagements. Mass media includes using social media (Facebook, twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp etc.), radio, television to channel useful messages about a particular situation. While community engagements are a face-to-face interaction of communities/individuals. This type of engagement requires meeting individuals at either household levels, street carnival or open gathering. Examples includes community meetings, market day engagements, street carnivals etc. I am currently involving in the COVID-19 mass media and community engagements sensitization in SierraLeone to ensure individuals go in for COVID-19 vaccines through the NaCOVERC body. The campaign requires promoting social and behaviour change action on the use COVID-19 Vaccines influencing communities and persuading Sierra Leoneans to go in for the two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Though the primary
focus is to ensure people go in for vaccines, the Ministry of Health via the NaCOVERC been printing short key messages surrounding misinformation, misconception, rumors and facts on the COVID-19 pandemic situation. This has help reduce misinformation from the public, dealing with misconception and
rumors and increasing people’s willingness to go in for vaccination. The target population for the campaign on the use of vaccines is more focusing on individuals 30 years and above with exception from healthcare workers who can access the vaccines when they are 18 years and above. However, the community engagement and mass media campaign is reaching everybody with social behaviour change messages whether small or big.Yes, the campaign met all the standards in function number 7 highlighted in the readings. Every precautionary measures from approach, to community engagement, capacity building, creating a conducive environment, developing standard messages and monitoring are all followed after the WHO standards. This has helped has a well-developed and managed system. And I believe that the campaign had had the desire public impact because it follows after the standard of public health principles and practice from providing physical, mental and social wellbeing of individuals according to the WHO definition. Honestly, going through the different reading materials has opened wider my understanding on the scope of what public health is. Not only focus on biomedical aspect but the mental and social factors as well. And I believe that this consistence practice will pave a way to manage any disease outbreak.
