Question 4: What are Guiding Assumptions for Pastoral Counseling? Assumption 1 is that God is already active in the counselee. This assumption
is that God is already active in the ministry, the person and in us, as the counselor.
Despite what issue has brought the counselee to counseling. The assumption is
that God is already active in developing solution
.
Assumption 2 is that complex
problems do not demand complex solutions. When the counselee is dealing with
mental illness, trauma, or hurting the assumption is, the counselor doesn’t have to
have a complex solution. The counselee needs guidance on finding an effective or
helpful solution to their problem. Assumption 3 is that finding exceptions help
create solutions. The assumption is that the counselee can find solutions for the
present problem by looking at previous resolutions. A situation like their current
situation can assist the counselee with creating solutions. Assumption 4 is that the
counselee is always changing.
Changes come with life experiences.
The
assumption is that what is applied to one counselee in one situation can change in
another. This is due to counselee perspective changing or could remain the same.
The counselor may change their approach to the same counselee or situation due
to experience too.
Assumption 5 is that the counselee is the expert and defines
goals.
The assumption is that the counselee is knowledgeable of their own life. As a
resource, the counselor is to assist in brainstorming solutions. The counselee is to
create and apply techniques or goals to resolve problems. Assumption 6 is that solutions are co-created.
The assumption is that as a
counselee they assist with creating their solutions along with the counselor.
Assumption 7 is that the counselee is not the problem, the problem is. The
assumption is that the behavior or lifestyle of the counselee may be identified as a
problem. The counselor should look at what led them to the behavior or lifestyle.

Assumption 8 is that the counseling relationship is positional.
The assumption is
that for the counselor to be encouraging and provide hope.
The counselee position
is to accept it.
The
counselor is to be at the side of the counselee to encourage
them through the journey they are completing. Assumption 9 is that if it’s not
broken, don’t fix it (Kollar, 2011). The assumption is to focus on what is hurting the
counselee. The counselee may have contributing factors to their issue that has
helped them and has effects on them.
