1.
Go to Physics Simulation: Simple Wave Simulator (physicsclassroom.com)
2.
You will be using this simulator to collect qualitative and quantitative data regarding longitudinal and transverse waves.
a.
You can make the simulation window larger using the arrow in the bottom right corner.
3. Using the grey box in the upper right corner of the graphing area, switch between longitudinal
(sound) and transverse (rope) waves. Answer the following questions:
a. Compare the motion of the green particles in longitudinal and transverse waves.
Before the wave starts to move, the green particles in the longitudinal wave are more densely packed. As the wave moves, the particles start to split off and then reunite when the transverse wave shows a curved movement with a visible crest and trough.
b. In what direction is the energy transfer for each type of wave? How do you know?
It moves in a left or right direction, up and down. The wave starts on whichever side it is being moved.
c. How does the motion of the red particles differ between longitudinal and transverse waves?
Both waves have crests and troughs, and the longitudinal wave also has oscillation, rarefactions and compression. Using the grey box in the upper right corner of the graphing area, switch between longitudinal (sound) and transverse (rope) waves. Answer the following questions
:
Particles separate more from one another when the wave's amplitude increases, which could give the impression that they are farther apart. This has to do with how far particles have moved from their rest positions.
b.
What wave properties (if any) change when you alter the speed
of the wave? The particles are getting farther apart. The wavelength may be affected by changing the wave's speed since it changes the spacing between the particles. The wave equation, v = * f, shows
λ
the relationship between wave speed, wavelength, and frequency in this observation.
What wave properties (if any) change when you alter the frequency
of the wave?
Both the wave's time and wavelength have an inverse relationship with its frequency.
Wavelength and period are inversely impacted by changes in wave frequency. Wavelength decreases with increasing frequency. The wave equation v = * f shows
λ
the inverse relationship between frequency and wavelength.
Create a data table
that quantitatively shows how changing the frequency affects the wavelength of the wave.
c.
You need a minimum of 5 different frequencies
in your table
d.
Record uncertainties
: frequency is ±0.001 Hz and wavelength is ±0.1 cm
e.
Below the table, record a single measurement
of the constant wave properties: wave speed and amplitude

4.
Create a Wavelength vs. Period graph
(wavelength on the y-axis).
a.
You should use your school laptop
and Logger Pro
to create this graph.
b.
Include a best fit line
and include the equation
for this graph with appropriate variables
from our Unit 6 equations.
c.
How much was the
slope
of this Logger Pro graph? ( with appropriate units
) Best fit equation: λ = 216.4 T + 2.563
The slope is 216.4 cm/ s
