Lab 6: Landing Gear 2023
Name: Victor Castaldo
Date: 10/12/2023
Purpose:
Understand hydraulic principles. Describe the function of hydraulic components
within a system. Identify the structural components of landing gear. Describe
typical landing gear retraction and extension systems. Be able to explain landing
gear position and warning. Become familiar with aircraft wheels, tires, and
brakes.

Landing Gear
Seminole PA44-180 POH Section 7
Learn how to draw the PA44landing gear video in module content
Activities:
Part 1:
-
Research the Piper Seminole Landing Gear and Brake System using The Pilot
Operating Handbook POH section 7 (on eLearning in Module content).
1.
What type of fluid is used in the landing gear retraction system?
2.
What causes the “WARN GEAR UNSAFE” annunciator to illuminate?
3.
On takeoff, the landing gear should be retracted before _____________ KIAS.
4.
The gear selector switch must be _______________________ before being put in the
Up or DOWN position.
5.
With the landing gear up, what would cause the gear warning horn to sound?
6.
What prevents inadvertent gear retraction when the aircraft is on the ground?
7.
What is the method of emergency landing gear extension for the Seminole?
8.
What is the tire pressure for the main tires?
9.
What is the normal time that it takes to extend or retract the landing gear?
10. The landing gear on the Seminole are ___________________ operated.
11. The landing gear may be lowered at any speed below ________________KIAS.
12. What type of fluid is used in the brake system?
13. What size main and nose tires are installed on the Seminole?
14. Why is it important to not reverse the direction of the landing gear when it is in
transit?
15. What can you do to check if one of the landing gear indicator lights is burned out?
Part 2
- Using your textbook define the function
following parts of the main landing
gear.
16. Shock strut
17. Brake disc
18. Torque link
19. Fork
20. Brake caliper
21. Trunnion
22. Side brace link
Part 3: -Define
the parts of the nose landing gear.
23. Oleo Strut
24. Steering bellcrank
25. Shimmy damper
Part 4:
25 points: Using the POH for the PA 44 and the video “Drawing the PA44
Landing gear video” in module content. Draw a schematic of the PA 44 and label all of
the major Landing gear components. Add you scanned image or take a photo and paste

##L3P1 About Vehicle Dynamics:
What are the main types of steering mechanisms?
How are vehicular steering drive systems classified? What about servo-assisted systems, how are they classified?
What are the main parameters involved in steering geometry? Describe geometrically.
What is Caster Angle? Make a geometric diagram. How does it affect the camber angle when the wheel is steered?

Q3. Audi’s design of their R8 model is designed in order to have the engine in the rear of the car with the following schematic of their mechanical power transmission. The engine is connected to the gearbox, where gear change occurs and then a driveshaft is used to transfer an equal ratio of power balancing the rear and front wheel power output thus referring to it as an all-wheel drive. The vehicle has been modified by a customer thus resulted to no power transfer to the front wheels although the rear wheels still have the same power output.
Using your knowledge, DEFINE and JUSTIFY the possible reasons of why the front drive isn’t functioning.
What are the solutions to this fault?

The design and assembly of the Hydraulic Circuit of drive (clamping and working), in the FluidSim software, with the following characteristics:
Sequential operation, put pressure, for the advance and return of the cylinders (according to the proper operation for the device) controlled by a directional 4x3 electric drive way;
The circuit must provide for different speed ranges for drilling work in order to allow different materials to be processed.
NOTE: Set the safety valve to 55 bar.

Q2: A speed reducer unit is to be designed for an input of 1.1 kW with a
transmission ratio 27. The speed of the hardened steel worm is 1440 r.p.m. The
worm wheel is to be made of phosphor bronze. The tooth form is to be 20°
involute. Given data: the centre distance (x) = 100 mm. Draw complete
construction of the system showing all missing parts, i.e. keys, bearings...etc, with
necessary mountings and fixations. (Put the main dimension). Assume suitable
missing dimensions or data if any.
