4.1 Discussion Milling Machine Operation Discuss the topic listed below based on the first letter of your last name . Be sure to thoroughly discuss each topic listed below. In your original post , answer the following: A-F: Vertical Milling Machines Discuss typical uses of Vertical Milling machines. Discuss the main types of Vertical Milling machines. What change(s) would you make to the Vertical Milling machine to improve or make it more efficient? [You must make a reasonable recommendation. Just saying it’s perfect or needs no changes is not acceptable] G-L: Horizontal Milling Machines Discuss typical uses of Horizontal Milling machines. Discuss the main types of Horizontal Milling machines. What change(s) would you make to the Horizontal Milling machine to improve or make it more efficient? [You must make a reasonable recommendation. Just saying it’s perfect or needs no changes is not acceptable] M-R: Helical Milling Discuss typical uses of Helical Milling. o Helical Milling creates a spiral cut in or shape in the material for helical gears. Which are sometimes used to make path ways for lubrication in some machines. A lubricated shaft is a perfect example with a zerk fitting on the outer housing you are able to cut shallow helical grooves that allow grease/oil to move through and lubricate the shaft. Discuss typical ways to set up a machine to do Helical Milling jobs. o From what I have seen it is a mill/lathe combination. You put you work piece in the chuck and it will rotate as the milling head comes down and then moves left or right to create the groove. What change(s) would you make to the Helical Milling process to improve or make it more efficient? o I honestly wouldn’t know where to start. I think I would speak with vendors or operators to see what type of issues or limitations the process has then work to improve it if at all possible. S-Z: Cam, Rack, Worm, and Clutch Milling Discuss typical uses of Cam, Rack, Worm, and Clutch Milling. Discuss typical ways to set up a machine to do Cam, Rack, Worm, or Clutch Milling. NOTE: You do not need to discuss each method. What change(s) would you make to the Cam, Rack, Worm, or Clutch Milling process to improve or make it more efficient? [You must make a
reasonable recommendation. Just saying it’s perfect or needs no changes is not acceptable] In your responses to your classmates , address the following: You must make at least 2 responses to posts on topics YOU DID NOT WRITE ABOUT. That is, if you discussed Vertical Milling Machines, your response must be on any topic OTHER THAN Vertical Milling Machines. Post replies in at least two other discussion threads. These replies should reflect genuine engagement and add value to the discussion. For example, ask questions, raise new issues, or give interpretations. Replies should be more than “I agree with your post.” or “Nice job!”. These types of posts will not receive credit towards a discussion forum grade.
