Intro to Thermal Engineering: EGR 2500-004 Homework #3b Fall 2023 Due Date: Saturday, October 7, 2023 The following homework assignment needs to be uploaded to Moodle using the assignment link provided on Moodle . The electrical power dissipated in a resistor is measured directly using a wattmeter and is to be compared to the electrical power determined indirectly (calculated) using the equation P = RI 2 , where R is the resistance measured by an ohmmeter and I is the electric current measured by an ammeter. You are provided with the following uncertainty information: Current measurement uncertainty, I 0.2 A Resistance measurement relative uncertainty, R/R +3% Wattmeter power measurement uncertainty, P d +1% of full scale, where full scale power P max = 4000 W a. Derive the equation for the uncertainty, P, in the indirect power measurement and type your derivation in a MS-Word document using Equation editor . Follow the guidelines for equations specified in the laboratory report handout, including equation numbers and transition sentences (think of this as being akin to a typed theory section in a lab report). b. Using the MS-Excel spreadsheet that was provided to you on Moodle with this homework assignment, do the following: i. Calculate the indirect power, P (in Watts), for each data point and determine the indirect and direct power uncertainties, P and P d (in Watts). Also determine the % relative uncertainties for both the indirect and direct power measurements. Use Excel formulas to calculate your numbers. Include a copy of your Excel sheet with your homework. ii. Generate a table in your MS-Word document using the values calculated in part (i). Make sure you include a table number and title and follow the table format guidelines specified in your lab report handout. iii. Plot the indirect (calculated) power versus the direct (measured) power. Insert error bars and a 45 degree line (y=x) in your graph. Format the plot following the figure format guidelines specified in your lab report handout and include it in your MS-Word document. Make sure you include a figure number and title. iv. Upload a copy of your Word document and Excel spreadsheet to Moodle using the provided assignment link.
