NUMBER: 5.1/122 ISSUED: January 1983 REVISED: PRODUCT: Saturn MODEL(S): All Specifics: SUBJECT: MAGNETIC PICKUP INSTALLATION Type of Change: Product Reliability, Product Improvement Recommended Compliance: Next Maintenance Purpose: To provide instructions for the installation of magnetic pickups in the compressor case of Saturn engines. GENERAL INFORMATION: The magnetic pickup must be properly installed to prevent erroneous speed signals which occur when the air gap between the pickup and compressor rotor blades is excessive. An excessive air gap will cause a weak AC signal to the gas producer speed monitor. Failure of the speed monitor to react properly to a weak signal during an overspeed condition can cause severe turbine engine damage. ACTION REQUIRED: Verify that the magnetic pickup is properly installed. INSTALLATION: 1. Compressor Case With Boss SERVICE BULLETIN Page 1 of 2 NUMBER: 5.1/122
a. During the next regularly scheduled maintenance; ensure that the main circuit breakers are "OFF" and tagged with "DO NOT OPERATE" tags. b. Examine the magnetic pole-piece for tip damage. c. Remove any particles from pole-piece tip and threads. Wipe pickup to remove any oil film. d. Check to ensure that a shoulder exists at the bottom of the threaded hole in the compressor case. This is to prevent the pickup from being inserted between the compressor blades. e.
