Graded HW 1
Fall 2023
The goal of this assignment is to obtain summary statistics for several variables. This is an
important part of most statistical studies.
You will be working with the GSS 2008 data set.
Here are the variables to be analyzed:
Mother Highest Degree (
NOT “Mother Highest Year School”; that’s an entirely
different variable
)
Marital Status
Age When 1
st
Child Born
For each of the three variables:
(1)
Basic info: state the variable’s name, whether it is quantitative or categorical, and
whether it is interval, ordinal or nominal.
Explain your responses.
(2)
Use StatCrunch to create a frequency distribution for each variable, including the
frequency and relative frequency columns.
If StatCrunch asks if you would like to
“turn on binning” when creating the frequency distribution, say “OK”.
Insert an
image of the output into your document.
(3)
Include an appropriate graph (histogram, bar graph, or pie chart) for each variable.
If
the variable is quantitative, mention the shape of the distribution (u-shaped, bell-
shaped, skewed to the left, skewed to the right).
Insert an image of the graph into
your document.
(4)
Use StatCrunch to find the measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) that
are appropriate for the variable.
Insert an image of the “Summary Stats” boxes that
you create.
Discuss the following:
If all three measures are appropriate for the variable, please say so and state
the values.
StatCrunch might not present you with the option of calculating all 3 measures
of central tendency.
If that is the case for any of the variables:
a.
state why you think that is.
b.
Can you find the measure of central tendency without using the “Summary
Stats” option?
If so, explain, and find the measure of central tendency.
(Hint: frequency distribution?)
Use the Copy option for StatCrunch output, or the snipping tool to integrate your tables and
graphs into your HW document.
