PRE-LAB QUESTIONS
•
What are the winding grooves which help a bullet maintain a stable trajectory called?
- Rifling
•
Would you expect to find more gunshot residue around an entrance or exit hole? Explain
your reasoning.
- I expect to find more gunshot residue around an entrance hole because it carries more gunshot residue when a bullet enters a surface. This is because it's the first contact point. Exit holes have less gunshot residue because as the bullet goes through, it starts to lose some of the gunshot residue.

Would a hand gun or shot gun be more difficult to trace and determine class characteristics? Explain your answer.
- A shotgun would be more difficult to trace and determine class characteristics because there is no rifling between the two weapons that can match them. Also, shotguns fire multiple pellets, while handguns fire single bullets. This makes individual tracing more difficult.
EXPERIMENT 1: BULLET TRAJECTORY ANALYSIS
Data Tables
Table 1: Bullet Trajectory Data
Bullet Hole Minor Axis (mm)
8mm
Bullet Hole Major Axis (mm)
9mm
Angle of Bullet Impact (°)
62.73°
Approximate Shoulder Height (inches)
56.8 inches
Post-Lab Questions
•
Record your calculations from Step 2 here.
θ= Sin-1(minor axis/major axis)= Sin-1(8mm/9mm)= 62.73
°
•
Draw the diagram from Step 6 here
•
Record your calculations from Step 7 here.
Tan(27.27)= a/45
a= tan(27.27)*45
a= 23.2
•
Did the calculated shoulder height fall on the estimated trajectory of the bullet? Use your results to support your answer.
-The calculated shoulder height didn't exactly fall on the estimated trajectory of the bullet. Using trigonometry, I calculated the shoulder height of 56.8 inches. However, my calculated shoulder height didn't align with the estimated trajectory of the bullet. My estimated trajectory of the bullet was a little bit higher than my calculations. That was probably because the string we used wasn't enough, so at one point I had to estimate it.
