Reflective Journal: Mindset
For this reflection, you are encouraged to step outside of your comfort zone, dig deep, and be honest with yourself. You will be assessed on the depth of your reflection, so take this opportunity to inspire personal thought and ideas. Note: This journal template has two parts that you need to complete.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Part 1 Directions: Respond thoroughly and honestly to each prompt. 1.
Take the ten question Mindset Assessment
and record your assessment results. In complete sentences, address the following questions: What did your results reveal? Did you agree with the results? Why or why not? Provide examples to support your response.
My assessment results were a score of 18. The score revealed to me that I am a lot more open minded to my learning abilities being something I could control with my own motivation and hard work. I agree with the results because when I reflect the course of my life and how I have dealt with some of my learning goals in the past. I remember if I really and truly was passionate about something even if I felt that obtaining the achievement was far reaching. I had the hope and belief that I could possibly make and happen. For example, when I gave birth to my daughter, I pretty much knew that it would be a solo project. I knew that my mother would try to take over, but if I truly wanted to raise my daughter the way I saw fit, I would have to take my little infant home and be firm with my family about my boundaries. I knew that when I made this
decision that it meant I would lose a large majority of the support that I received, but it did not care. I taught myself how to be my own idea of being a good mother. I took classes and research online about certain things I didn’t know and relied on testimonials from strangers. I truly surprised self, but I stuck to my guns and I am very proud of the now 8year old that I have raise primarily on my own.
2. Choose three strategies from the 25 Ways to Develop a Growth Mindset
article and explain how you will use each strategy in your academic, personal, or professional life to help you develop a growth mindset. I plan to try different learning tactics. I realize times have change and there are so many resources available to use and its okay to ask peers how they may have tackled ideas instead of struggling over trying to race and get things done and sacrifice the quality of work that I know I can produce. I will take my time and lean upon my resources more than I have. I truly like the
idea of replacing the word “failing” with “learning”. I am my own worst enemy when it comes to
doubting or putting my self-esteem low because I didn’t get something right on the first try or able to achieve what my peers or colleagues were able to do. I want to be able to take a loss and just learn from it, instead of letting it deter me from my goals at hand. Seeking approval
from others has been a very bad habit for most of my life. I need validation from my boss, coworkers and professors in order to feel successful. I want to set my own examples and goals for success and be okay with me liking me. I want to feel liberated and grow.
3. Explain what you discovered about how a growth mindset can help you learn.
I have learned that a growth mindset opens a wider range of learning possibilities, a gain of personal satisfaction which ultimately will lead to a full life of success.

Part 2
Directions:
Did you know that what you say to yourself or others can boost your productivity, confidence, and relieve stress? When you replace fixed mindset phrases with more growth oriented phrases, you can change your outlook and your outcomes.
Below are some common fixed mindset statements that students tell themselves. Restate them using a growth mindset perspective. Growth mindset statements need to include the action that will be taken to yield more positive results. The first two are done for you as examples. Original Statement
