Assessment
Take some time now to answer the following questions. Please note that the IRIS Center does not collect your Assessment responses. If this is a course assignment, you should turn them in to your professor using whatever method he or she requires. If you have trouble answering any of the questions, go back and review the Perspectives & Resources pages in this module.
1.
What is differentiated instruction?
An approach in which teachers adjust their curriculum and instruction to maximize the learning of all students through various teaching methods. 2.
Describe at least four significant ways in which differentiated instruction differs from traditional classroom instruction.
One of the significant ways in which in which differentiated instruction differs from traditional classroom instruction is the group formatting during instruction. In a traditional classroom the entire classroom is addressed in a whole-group setting while in a differentiated classroom it is more in either small groups or pairs.
A second major difference would be the way their instruction is being provided. In a traditional classroom, is only instructed in one certain way meanwhile in a differentiated classroom, instruction is being provided in various ways.
A third difference is what the teacher relies on when presenting information to
the class. In a traditional classroom they rely on their textbooks solely meanwhile in differentiated classroom, they use a variety of materials.
A fourth difference is the way instructional tasks are aligned for students. In traditional classroom instructional tasks are simply aligned by grade level standards and although it is the same for a differentiated classroom, their tasks
are also designed to address students’ needs and differences 3.
How can teachers get to know their students? Make sure to include the three characteristics of students that are important for differentiating instruction and give at least two examples of how teachers can learn about each.
Teachers must get to know their students in terms of readiness, interest and learning profile.
Readiness is referred to getting to know a student’s knowledge and academic level like examining their results in a standardized test.
Interest refers to getting to know what kind of activities inspire them, which could be by discussing their current likes and dislikes.
Learning Profile refers to what environmental factors may influence a student learning and which method they learn best in which can be by observing them
during class.

Ms. Hasbro has taught high-school Spanish for ten years. She
would like to start differentiating instruction and needs to make
some changes.
a.
Explain why each of Ms. Hasbro’s classroom
practices listed below is not a differentiated practice.
Ms. Hasbo’s classroom practices listed below are not part of a differentiated practice for many reasons. For example, the first bullet point states that she only teaches by doing lectures yet in a differentiated classroom she would provide various teaching methods throughout her lesson plan like visual representations or a
hands-on lesson. Another example would be the way she groups her students. In a differentiated classroom she would not only pair the students based on last year’s test scores but also on their needs to improve their scores. And last, in a differentiated classroom she would provide more than just a written test. b.
Describe what Ms. Hasbro can do differently with each of them.
Ms. Habo could incorporate more to her lecture like visual representations to keep the students engaged. She could also offer another project aside from just the tests on Fridays. Aside from bonus points for classroom participation, she could also provide extra credit for missing assignments and provide test corrections for the students who failed their tests.
Delivers instruction primarily by lecturing
Does not permit students to retake tests they have failed
Records zeros for missing assignments
Groups students at the beginning of the year based on the previous year’s achievement test scores
Gives bonus points for classroom participation
Gives a test every Friday
5.
Think back to a class you took in high school. Describe both the class and how the teacher typically conducted it. Describe five elements that you would change to make it more differentiated. (Make sure to include at least one each for content, process, and product.)
Thinking back to my four years of high school, one particular class
that I would change to make it more differentiated would be my
algebra class during freshman year. My math teacher was more of a behaviorist teacher. He liked to go strictly by the rules in the book, which we still managed to learn. Despite it all, I did believe he could incorporate more into his lectures to keep us engaged. His class setup was by groups, and we got to chosen ourselves what table we wanted to sit in. This helped a lot during our assignments as we got to help each other out. His lectures consisted of simply reading from the book, PowerPoints, and only worked out one problem on the board and left us to finish the rest of the assignment ourselves. I would definitely change this method
of instruction. I would include various examples during my lecture
and different methods to solve these equations rather than just one.
As I have learned, there are many different methods in which we can solve an equation. I would simply encourage teachers to become more involved and provide different teaching methods and
design lessons that will help our students succeed in the future.
