AB565 Professional Ethics Week 7: Study Guide Study Guide Questions 1.
Holland (1978) argues that behaviorism is part of the solution. In doing so, he comments on the situations from several different populations and analyzes the contingencies governing their behavior. Comment on Holland’s analysis and discuss whether you agree with it, and why or why not. As this article was published over 40 years ago, you may also comment on the extent to which this article is still relevant today. Holland claims behaviorism focuses on the desired behavior rather than the relatively unchanging environmental circumstances that influence it. Behavior modifiers may focus on treating the individual rather than the sociocultural conditions that exist outside of the therapy context and help to preserve the behavior, such as alcoholism. I agree with these ideas because we might concentrate on a particular behavior and how to control the environment to work around it to reduce or perhaps enhance our desired goal behaviors. 2.
Fawcett (1991) reviews an approach to conducting community research in behavior analysis. Discuss how you might take Fawcett’s approach and work with a specific population of individuals as an individual behavior analyst or as part of a behavior analytic organization. Note:
To tie into the Holland reading, you may select one of the populations that Holland discusses. Additionally, the population you discuss here does not
need to be individuals with autism or developmental disabilities. Assume I am a researcher examining a community-based in Dallas, TX, and the possibility of such a group using mental health services, such as search engines, discovering nearby therapists, and participating in community-based projects that promote mental health awareness. I would first establish collaborative partnerships with those who share my interest in establishing research procedures. Discuss if the research is relevant to the community's situation. Ensure that the participants and persons selected match our community's problem for the study to be appropriate and productive. Create research interventions that are reproducible and durable for future investigation. 3.
What arguments do Bannerman et al. (1990) provide in favor of the right to chose? Support your answer with evidence in the article, or evidence provided elsewhere in other readings/chapters. Bannerman et al. (1990) argued that persons with developmental impairments have the fundamental freedom to choose, just like any other citizen. He asserted that allowing clients to
AB565 Professional Ethics choose would better prepare them for daily life and community skills requiring judgments and preferences. Finally, he found that persons given the opportunity would prefer this situation. When researching the impact of choice on preference, he discovered that children decided to engage in activities where they could select their reinforcers over those where the experimenter picked the same reinforcers.
To support his idea, he examined the impact of choice on participation. He discovered that women who picked their activities attended a fitness club more frequently than women assigned the same exercises. Finally, the hypothesis of the practical impacts of choice on problem behavior is demonstrated fewer times when an individual has choices. When autistic children could choose their assignments, supplies, and reinforcers, they displayed fewer problem behaviors (e.g., aggressiveness, self-injury) than when the therapist did. 4.
How might you better incorporate allowing individuals to chose more effectively into your daily life or professional practice? In the clinical context, they provide clients with alternatives in communication that best meet their developmental skills. In my experience, using verbal and visual clues, the client successfully conveyed their needs/desires. This method can be offered using PECS communication boards, offering "what do you want" opportunities rather than maintaining a self-based preference plan for the client. 5.
Pick one of the three articles. Select one argument they outline in their paper and analyze that argument from the standpoint of the core ethical principles. Which principle to their prioritize? Why? Do they address each core principle? How does their stance align with the core principles AND the current BACB ethical code? Note:
All three articles were published before the BACB code existed. Bannerman et al.'s (1990) study underlines that persons with developmental disabilities have the same basic freedom to choose as other citizens. This enables a client to live in a community where decision-making and choice are emphasized. This philosophy is reflected in the BACB basic values of treating people with compassion, dignity, and respect while benefiting others. Giving clients the opportunity to advocate for themselves is treating others fairly, even if they have a disadvantage; we benefit others by understanding that, in the long term, the client will have the exposure and possible abilities to without restriction. These concepts are closely related to the BACB ethical guidelines, which emphasize a client-focused methodology.
