MATH 201 Course Project deliverable 4. Hypothesis test ● Name: Orissa Pollard
Question 1.
Describe your null and alternative hypotheses in words.
Null Hypothesis, H
0
: No significant difference in the suspended sediment concentration between 2019
and 2021
Alternative Hypothesis, H
a
: There is a significant difference in suspended sediment concentration
between 2019 and 2021
Question 2.
Describe your null and alternative hypotheses using symbols. (10 pts)
Null Hypothesis, H
0
:
µ1 = µ2
Alternative Hypothesis, H
a
:
µ1 ≠ µ2
Question 3.
Select the significance level (ɑ). (5 pts)
In this case, I will use a 5% significance level in assessing the study's significance.
Question 4.
Select an appropriate test, and calculate the test statistic and p-value using Excel
.
Since we want to compare the suspended sediment concentration in mg/L for two years, the appropriate
statistical test is conducting the two samples' independent t-test. The above technique assists in making
comparisons of the two separate groups, which are independent of each other. The results were analyzed
and presented in Table 1, as shown.
Table 1: 2-sample independent t-Test
Test statistic: 1.6339
P-value: 0.12
Question 5.
Determine whether you should reject or not reject the null hypothesis based on the p-value.
State the reason to support your answer. (Maximum 50 words)
From the findings in Table 1 above, the p-value was 0.12, greater than 0.05. Thus, we do not reject the
null hypothesis at 5%.
Question 6.
Describe your conclusion in words in the context of your research question. (50 – 100 words)
(20 pts)
A two-sample independent t-test was conducted to assess whether there was a significant difference in the
suspended sediment concentration in mg/L between 2019 and 2021. The findings show statistically
insignificant results,
t
= 1.634,
p
= .12 >.05; we do not reject the Ho, and the conclusion is that there is no
significant difference in the suspended sediment concentration between 2019 and 2021 at 5%, with the
sample 2 in 2021 having a higher mean of the suspended sediment concentration (
M=
6.67,
SD=
3.26)
than sample 1 in 2019 (
M=
5.31,
SD=
1.83).
Conventions of Writing:
Read and check grammatical errors before submission. (5 pts)
The study assessed if significant differences exist in the suspended sediment concentration between 2019
and 2021 and used a two-sample independent t-test in analysis. The findings show that there was an
insignificant mean difference in the suspended sediment concentration between sample 1 in 2019 and
sample 2 in 2021 at 5% (
t=
1.634,
p=
.12 >.05). Sample 2 in 2021 had a higher mean suspended sediment
concentration(
M=
6.67,
SD=
3.26) than sample 1 in 2019 (
M=
5.31,
SD=
1.83).
