SCIE 211 Lab 3: Graphing and Data Worksheet
Pre-lab Questions:
1.
When should you use each of the following types of graphs? Fill answers in the table below. Type of Graph
Used to show Line graph
Used to show trends or progress over time.
Scatter plot
Used to show and observe the relationship between two numerical variables.
Bar graph
Used to show and understand relationships between categorical variables.
Histogram
Used to show the shape of the data distribution.
Pie Chart
Used to show and compare parts of the whole.
2.
Several ways in which we can be fooled or misled by a graph were identified in the Lab 3 Introduction. Paste two examples of misleading graphs below. Be sure to identify why each graph is misleading. This graph is misleading since it does not start
at zero.
This graph is misleading, the scale values are missing from the graph

a.
What was the calculated value for the slope of your trendline? Y= 5.6957
b.
What is the expected value for the slope of your trendline? 24.435
c.
Calculate the % error. % error = (measured value – true value) x 100%.
True value
1.405%
d.
Based upon your % error, how good were your measurements? What are other sources of error? Based on the percentage of the error 1.41%, a small percentage error. Percent errors indicate how big our errors are when we measure something in an analysis process. Smaller percentage errors indicate that we are close to the accepted or original value. A large percentage error is a warning that our observations would not be accurate and should not be taken as the basis for a major conclusion.
2.
Explain your rationale for the type of graph you chose to display the data you collected from your survey. The Column Graph is what I chose to use for graphing my results. It allowed me to show the results of my questions and compare the results easily.
3.
Now that you have graphed the data, did you choose correctly? Why or why not? I believe the choice of a column graph was the correct one. It represents my results and compares my results easily. It is also a commonly used graph.
