Handout for Week 7, LER 593 Name: _______________ 1. A major west coast city provides one of the most comprehensive emergency medical services in the world. Operating in a multiple hospital system with approximately 20 mobile medical units, the service goal is to respond to medical emergencies with a mean time of 12 minutes or less. The director of medical services wants to formulate a hypothesis test that could use a sample of emergency response times to determine whether or not the service goal of 12 minutes or less is being achieved. 1a. Please formulate the null and alternative hypotheses in both verbal and mathematical formats. ( Hint : Use the service goal to form your null hypothesis) 1b. Assuming you were the director, what would you do if the null hypothesis is rejected? What would you do if the null hypothesis fails to be rejected? 2. The manager of an automobile dealership is considering a new bonus plan designed to increase sales volume. Currently, the mean sales volume is 14 automobiles per month. The manager wants to conduct a research study to see whether the new bonus plan increases sales volume. To collect data on the plan, a sample of sales personnel will be allowed to sell under the new bonus plan for a one-month period. 2a. Please formulate the null and alternative hypotheses in both verbal and mathematical formats. ( Hint: Use the manager’s expectation to form your alternative hypothesis) 2b. What is your conclusion when H 0 cannot be rejected? 2c. What is your conclusion when H 0 can be rejected? 3. In Question 1, what is the Type I error in this situation? What are the consequences of making this error? What is the Type II error in this situation? What are the consequences of making this error?
4. In Question 2, what is the Type I error in this situation? What are the consequences of making this error? What is the Type II error in this situation? What are the consequences of making this error? 5. Consider the following hypothesis test: H 0 : μ≥ 20 H a : μ < 20 A sample of 50 provided a sample mean of 19.4. The population SD is 2. Perform a hypothesis test at the .05 level of significance. 6. Consider the following hypothesis test: H 0 : μ = 18 H a : μ≠ 18 A sample of 48 provided a sample mean of 17 and a sample SD of 4.5. Perform a hypothesis test at the .01 level of significance.
