1. Draft an academic personal mission statement in the box below. Do the following in your draft:
a. Write a sentence or two summarizing your purpose for pursuing higher education and
your proposed graduation date.
If things go as planned and after doing the math, I will be graduating in 3.33 years that would be, term 26EW1 October 2026.
My purposes for pursuing a higher education are for my children to see what hard work and dedication looks like, for me to show myself that I can do anything that I set my mind to, and to get into a career that not only helps financially but also helps other employees on a day-to-day basis. b. Write a sentence or two summarizing the type of professional you wish to become in your career.
I want to continue being the professional I am today but better, and by that, I mean by always listening to both sides of the conversation, be open minded to other inputs, pacing myself and delegating tasks to help with not getting burnt out
and making sure my staff always knows my door is always opened to them if needed. c. Write a sentence or two summarizing how you hope to enhance your community or profession with your degree.
With my degree I hope that I can work for a company that will have fundraisers within the community or meetings with other companies where we can pitch ideas on how to make lives easier and more manageable for staff. This way we have a better work-life balance and less burnouts among staff.
2. Draft three SMART academic goals relating to your academic personal mission statement. These goals should be achievable in the next six months (short-term). Consider the following as you create your goals:
a. How will each goal help you achieve your mission?
b. How will you know you have been successful in meeting each goal?
c. When do you intend to complete each goal?
Goal 1 - Try to find a job within Human Resources
a.
Gets my foot in the door, I can learn the true ins and out of each part of HR and will help me further in my education b.
I will know I have been successful in this goal once I have either accepted a position within a HR setting or I have been able to assist my manager with some of her tasks that she does to help our current HR Manager. c.
I intend to complete this goal in 4-6 months. Goal 2 - Taking courses that are strictly geared towards my degree first.
d.
Instead of taking a hard class that is geared towards my career and taking an elective, I will double up on courses that are geared towards my career. This way
I have more time to add on electives that are calmer and fun towards the end of my degree.
e.
I know I would have been successful at completing this goal once I have talked with my advisor about my ideas and we have both gone over the pros and cons of my idea, while she has steered me in the right direction. f.
I intend to complete this goal in the next couple of weeks. I know I must get a feel
for doubling up courses first before I take two difficult classes at once. This gives us time to discuss everything first.
Goal 3 - To become a better professional than I am today
g.
Taking the initiative to sit with an HR manager to learn better ways to hold myself
as a professional, asking employees what their ideal HR manager looks like to them, going out into the community and do the same thing but use that as research and gather what different industries standards are.
h.
I would have been successful once I have the data in front of me and I can slowly
start implementing those ideas onto myself as I further my degree as well as my career
i.
I intend to complete this goal in at least 6 months but maximum 1 year. See Full Personal Mission Draft on Next Page.
As the school year continues, we are asked what our personal mission statements would be. As I sit here for what feels like days on end even though it has only been a couple of hours, I think I have figured it out. I will start off if things go as planned and after doing the math, I will be graduating in 3.33 years which would be term 26EW1 or to make it easier, October of 2026. My purposes for pursuing a higher education are for my children to see what hard work and dedication looks like, for me to show myself that I can do anything that I set my mind to, and to get into a career that not only helps financially but also helps other employees on a day-to-day basis. As the courses come and go, I learn more about my career from an educational side. I know I will be asked by
various instructors and/or my advisor what type of professional I wish to become in my career. After much thought I would have to say, I want to continue being the professional I am today but better, and by that I mean by always listening to both sides of the conversation, be open minded to other inputs, pacing myself and delegating tasks
to help with not getting burnt out and making sure my staff always knows my door is always opened to them if needed. I know I can make better myself professionally by taking the initiative to sit with an HR manager to learn better ways to hold myself as a professional, asking employees what their ideal HR manager looks like to them, going out into the community and do the same thing but use that as research and gather what different industries standards are. Then once I have done that and I have the data in front of me, I can slowly start implementing those ideas onto myself as I further my degree as well as my career.
