Introduction
Hello, my name is Makayla, for my practicum I have the pleasure of being back at
my elementary school. I am working in Mrs. J. kindergarten classroom and may I say working in
a kindergarten classroom is an experience. I really do enjoy working in a kindergarten classroom.
My favorite part honestly is working with all of the students. My cooperating teacher allows me to work with the ELL students and the students that have some difficulty reading. With this I was
able to choose my ELL for my Case Study project.
Introducing My ELL Student
For my case study I have chosen a girl. Her name for the time being will be Soljee. Soljee
is six years old, and she is in Mrs. J’s kindergarten class. She was born in the United States, and she has lived here her entire life. Her family however is from Azores, the islands of Portugal. Her
family is really big in religion, they are Catholics and here is a fun fact about Soljee. Soljee is a princess for a Portuguese organization up north. In her household they speak Portuguese and English. ’’ Soljee’s Interest I want to take the time to thank my cooperating teacher Mrs. J and Soljee’s parents for helping me gather information. When I was interviewing Soljee she did her best to answer my questions, but she was unable to answer some of my questions. Nevertheless, I was able to get some of questions answered. The first question I asked Soljee was “What do you like?”. Soljee likes herself, she likes the color the pink, she loves playing with her toys. She is a really big fan of Barbie. Now onto to the things Soljee dislikes. She doesn’t like cars. She said those were boy toys. Her favorite color is not black. She doesn’t like dinosaurs and she doesn’t like Ken from Barbie. When it comes to activities Soljee has multiple things that she likes to do. First, she likes 2
to play games, she likes saying sorry to her brothers. She loves playing with her dogs. When we were discussing how many dogs she has, she told me two at first. Then I asked her again and the number changed to five. I didn’t know which one was correct, so I asked her to name her dogs. There names are Zelda, Daiya, Romeo, Wants, and Bruno. I have no idea if those are all of her dogs but I’m going to roll with it. Her favorite foods include fruits (bananas, oranges, strawberries, purple and green grapes), vegetables (carrots, broccoli), Mac and Cheese, Crabs, Chicken, Fish, Juice, and Sandwiches. Her favorite holiday is Christmas. She enjoys getting presents and spending time with her family. Soljee’s School Data
So, when it came to collecting the data, it was a bit hard to find. I reached out to my cooperating teacher and asked her if there was any way for me to gain access to some of Soljee’s
data that is required for this assignment. She sent me some data and told me she has never heard of some of the other things. The only data I was able to gather was Soljee’s reading and math scores. With reading her score ranges from 590-680. In math her score ranges from 690-730. This information is from an assessment given to the students who range from Pre-K – 3. This assessment measures the student’s early literacy and numeracy skills with a computer-based assessment. My cooperating teacher only has this data. When I asked about any additional data, she told me Soljee does not have any of that data, she has not tested for it. BICS and CALPS
Now I will discuss how Soljee uses BICS and CALP. First let’s define these two words so that we have a better understanding. BICS = social language. Essentially BUCS refer to everyday social skills. Example, communicating with other children during recess, calling someone on the phone. Just interacting socially with other people. Soljeee is very good at social 3

interaction. She is always talking and laughing with her classmates. Whenever it’s time for recess she is always front and center and having a good time with her friends. CALPS refers to the students academic learning. When it comes to reading Soljee works very well in this subject. Whenever we have reading stations, Mrs. J. sends the students who struggle with me. Soljee is not among those students, she is able to work independently during reading stations. In writing she does well too, she just gets distracted very easily. Science and Social Studies happens toward the end of the day. We usually watch videos about those two subjects. She pays attention, but she is easily distracted, Soljee does really well in her special classes. Whenever I am at the school for my internship, I usually go with them to Music or Art. Soljee is very engaged during those classes. She’s dancing, playing instruments, drawing just overall participating. Community

we serve. We foster a spirit of belonging, unity, and interdependence based on mutual trust and respect to create socially responsible environments that challenge all of us to listen, to learn, to change, and to serve.” How do I address the core value of community during my field placement? Well, when I first started the practicum, I made it my mission to try and form
relationships with all of the students in the classroom. I don’t want them to be frightened whenever I came into the classroom. When I came back the second time my cooperating teacher told me the children were asking for me nonstop. Now whenever I show up the children are all very excited to see me, my university supervisor saw it as well. When she 4
came to observe my lesson, she told me that I have managed to form a great relationship with the students and the cooperating teacher. 5
