Chloe Allen ID: 001153018 Task 1: Video Observation A Video #1757, Grade 5, Focusing on Two-Dimensional Geometry A1. For the first video, I chose a 5 th Grade mathematics classroom that is working on completing a basic geometry activity page. The class consists of 27 students, ranging between 10 and 11. Over half of the students turned 11 by March of 2013. There is only one student in the class that is ELL, but he is advanced and is capable of writing and reading English fluently. The student's ability to complete and understand tasks varies in the classroom. Some of the students range in the 97 th percentile to some being in the lower 14 th percentile. The class aligns with the Concrete Operational Stage of Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive De velopment Theory. A2. The teacher had the students working in groups of four, giving them the opportunity to have small group discussions. He was engaged in the students learning and used moments of question to help grow the group discussion. Using leading questions to continue the conversation, until the students could solve the problem. Each group was engaged with each other and used the discussions to increase understanding and completion of the task. They were using protractors to measure the work on their activity sheet. This aligns with the Concrete Operational Stage since the class is engaging in a hands-on activity. The questions that the students were asking the teacher related to deductive reasoning and the teacher helped the students come to an understanding by leading group discussions. In the Concrete Operational Stage deductive logic is difficult for children at this age. B Video # 2533, Grade 6, Analyzing Properties of Light using Scientific and Mathematical Discourse B1. For the second video, I chose the 6 th grade science class the is working on a Light unit. The class consists of 27 students that range from 11-13. The class is a combination of two classes together with 13 of the students being the teacher's homeroom and 14 of the students being from another teacher's class. Due to the range of student's capabilities in the classroom and having students that use both
English and Spanish at home, I feel that the learning barrier in the classroom is the language barrier. B2. The teacher addresses the language barrier in her classroom by using in depth instruction and allowing for hands on work in the classroom. The teacher takes time to visit with each group of students to ensure that they are understanding and applying what is being taught. Visual aids are used to support growth and to assess students' ability to take information and transfer it from what they are hearing and seeing, on to their class work. C Video #134, Grade 10,11,12, Applying the Properties of Quadrilaterals to Determine Length and Angle C1. For the last video, I chose 10 th ,11 th and 12 th grade mathematics classroom. The class is comprised of 16 males and 12 females. There is a mix of 10 th and 11 th graders in the class with the majority being in 10 th grade. The school is in a rural area with most of the students being in a lower economic class. The class is using the first three levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy which is remember, understand, and apply. C2. The teacher is meeting with small groups of students to help them with a worksheet over the lengths of segments and angles of a parallelogram. When she is working with the students, she is asking them to use information about quadrilaterals that they already know and apply it to the parallelograms. By doing this, she is using the first level of Bloom’s Taxonomy, remember. The teacher is leading a discussion with the students she is helping in each group about the information that they already know, such as the degree of a right angle or the classification of a triangle to apply it to what they are currently working on. She then has them clarify the information back to her and apply it to what they are doing. By doing this the students understand and apply past information to the work they are currently doing.
