MAT 126 Project Template Community Gardens? Don’t Mind if I Do Amber L. Cosey Southern New Hampshire University MAT126: Mathematical Reasoning for Modern Problem Solving Laurie Sloma February 22, 2024
Part One: Context My chosen scenario is placing a community garden on a piece of underdeveloped land nearest a local middle school. The prices in my own community for things like fresh produce are constantly rising. The cost for fruit and vegetables that are covered in preservatives to keep them fresh is getting unaffordable. How can having a community garden save the people money and offer a healthier choice for the people of the community? The math used for this research will be comparisons, finance graphs and data analysis, variable data analysis, and percentages. For example, I can use data analysis to show how over time it would cost less for the community to have this garden. Once built and stockpiled, this garden would cost the community less money to grow and maintain the garden. I can also do a cost analysis to show how much money is saved when a consumer does not have to buy produce at retail cost. Also, I can show how providing free or low-cost produce makes it easier to have access to produce without hurting the pockets of the average consumer. Using these types of math will show the benefits of having a community garden and how they will financially impact the community by offering reduced prices or no cost fresh produce to the community and promote healthy eating. A way to view the scenario of putting a community garden in the undeveloped place of the middle school is to consider it as a solution to the price increase in produce which then affects the ability to obtain healthier produce options.
This graph shows that the cost of fruits and vegetables had an increase of 0.3%.. Food increased 2.7% over a timeline of 12 months. It also costs restaurants more when looking at the cost of fruits and vegetables. The cost of bananas and oranges (which are the most common fruits) saw an increase in price because of availability. The vertical bar graph shows how over a 12-months’ time the cost of food increased 2.7% according to the latest data published by the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).  I can use percentages in the data to show the increase in the price of food, more specifically the cost of fruit and vegetables in the U.S. The data shows that the cost of fruits and vegetables have increased 0.3%
ï‚· I would estimate the mean food cost rate to be about 5.8% more than it has been over the last 12 months. To calculate the mean, you can add all the months up and divide the total by the number of months. This study uses data the shows the benefits of a SNAP- Ed- funded community garden. SNAP-Ed is the nutrition education and obesity prevention component of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. In North Carolina, the rural communities experience high rates of chronic illness due to health inequities exacerbated by the decline of major industries. It speaks about how their community gardens increase access to fresh produce and opportunities for more physical activities that could offer major additional benefits. This source states that the study uses mind mapping to show the positive effects of a community garden. The graph used shows the use of 6 gardens over a span of 10 years, a description of the garden participants, descriptions of the garden partner, and the number of REM participants.
