You should post a Microsoft Word document in response to the questions to the
Assignment Box by May 4, 11:59pm
1) Select a data source to analyze in Statcrunch
- Login to MyStatLab and select the StatCrunch link on the left side
- Select Visit StatCrunch website link
- Scroll down to the section labeled “Featured Data Sets” and Select “More Featured Data
Sets”
- Pick a dataset of interest to you
The dataset that I picked is called “Marriage vs. The Economy.”
2) Pick 2 quantitative variables from the dataset you choose
y will be the variable you are trying to predict as a linear function of x

What two variables did you pick? Which one was x and which one was y?
The two quantitative variables from my dataset are the number of marriages (per year)
and the median hourly wage (in dollars). My x variable is my median hourly wage and my
y variable is the number of marriages.
- What type of linear relationship do you believe exists between x and y?
Positive: As x gets larger, y tends to get larger
Negative: As x gets larger, y tends to get smaller
Personally, I believe there will be a positive linear relationship between both variables.
3) Do a scatter plot of y versus x and insert this scatter plot into your Word document
(overlay the best fitting line). Does the scatter plot seem to support the nature of the
relationship between x and y that you thought from part 2? On the basis of the line that
was overlaid on the scatter plot, how strong does the relationship seem to be between x and
y? Overlay your best fitting line on the scatter plot (you can get the slope and y-intercept
from step 4).

Select the Graph menu item (across the top) and select Scatter Plot.
- Specify the x and y variables (under X Variable and Y Variable respectively)
- Under Overlay Polynomial order, specify 1 and select Best Fit
- Compute
- Put into your Word Document
Select Options above your Scatter Plot (top left) in StatCrunch and Copy
Right click the image and Select Copy Image
Go into Word. At the location, you want your scatter plot, Select Crtl Alt V; then
Bitmap
No, the scatter plot doesn’t seem to support the positive linear relationship that I thought
variables x and y would have.
The variables seem to have a pretty strong negative relationship between them (the points
seem to be close to the red line)
4) Conduct a hypothesis test on H

: slope = 0; Ha: slope positive or negative (your
hypothesis from part 2). Using α = 0.05, is there a significant linear relationship between x
and y (paste your output to support your answer)? What is the linear model (y = mx + b,
fill in the numbers for m and b)? In the context of the problem, what is the interpretation
of the slope, m?
Select Stat menu option across the top and then select Regression -> Simple Linear
Enter your x and y variables
Under the hypothesis test section go to Ha slope and specify the direction of the
relationship (< or >)
Select Compute
