Marlene Fuller South University HCM 4025-Strategic Management in Healthcare Professor: Hwangi H Lu, PhD 2/2/2023 As the director of communicable diseases in a city health department, If I was faced with dealing with a new and highly contagious disease SARS (South University, n.d.) . I would first research what SARS is, How is it transferred, what causes it, what the symptoms and treatments are, and how SARS can be avoided. SARS is a type of pneumonia, caused by a novel coronavirus, that may progress to respiratory failure and can even result to death (Milstein, 2023) . When an infected person coughs or sneezes, respiratory droplets are propelled thru the air and transferred on people or nearby surfaces. (Illinois.gov, n.d.) “SARS is spread through contact with infected humans or animals and most people with SARS experience symptoms like severe pneumonia with respiratory failure, fever, chills, and rigors, muscle pain, coughing, headache, and dizziness (Milstein, 2023) ”. SARS can have acute, sometimes fatal duration and the treatment for SARS consist of comfort measures, corticosteroids, and isolation (Milstein, 2023) . Now, that I know what SARS is and the harm it would cause the community, I would implement utilize the 4 phase of emergency management approach, which is a step-by-step process. The first step is Mitigation this phase involves taken action to prevent or mitigate disaster causes (FEMA, n.d.) . Examples of this phase for SARS would consist of wearing PPD and isolation . The 2 nd step would be Preparedness this phase includes planning, training, and educational activities (FEMA, n.d.) . I would reinforce basic infection control practices and hand
hygiene in all healthcare facilities, as well as inform the community of the importance of hand hygiene and mask use in high-risk areas. The 3 rd phase is Response in this phase business and other operations are disrupted (FEMA, n.d.) . During this phase we have active SARS patients and all healthcare organizations should be following infection control and wearing PPD. Personal safety and well-being in an emergency, as well as the length of the response phase, are determined by how well the preparedness phase was planned. The final phase is the Recovery during this period, restoration efforts take place alongside regular operations and activities (FEMA, n.d.) . Healthcare organizations are now working to return to normalcy, which may take years. Overall, making that the during the preparedness phase that the plan is clear and that all parties understand the plan is important so the plan can be successful implemented. Disasters can be devastating; you never know when a disaster is likely to occur. So being prepared and having a disaster plan is important. References FEMA. (n.d.). Emergency Management.
