Hi everyone, The ethical situation that came up from this week’s discussion video was choosing to launch the Challenger shittle, even though there is data and evidence suggesting it would end in a disaster with the loss of lives. Leadership chooses not to listen to what others were presenting but pressured decisions from others. The leader’s decision impacted the results of the Challenger’s mission by ruining the lives of the families that lost individuals on the shuttle. As well as changed NASA and the space program in how it needs to make decisions. NASA also lost the respect and trust of many in the public as well as employees. As a leader, an important part of communication is the feedback received from followers. In this situation followers were yelling and raising their voice to plead to leaders to realize that launching was not a good idea. However, in the end leaders chose not to listen to what others were saying and came up with a unanimous decision to launch. The ethical values that I did take away from this video that I can apply to my own leadership would be to listen to others and take their opinions into account. I would also ask more questions about deciding what is wrong and right. I think the moral of this video is that listening to your employees is important and if there is wavering decision, that is especially life threatening, to wait and talk out all the pros and cons with everyone. I would also not have a meeting with the entire staff and only talk to leadership. That just shows that followers' work is not being appreciated and respected.
