3 Technicalities The Need The Mario Lemieux Foundation is dedicated to cancer research, patient care, supporting families in challenging situations, and much more while giving people a chance to win battles they face (About, 2023). Created by Mario Lemieux, legendary former Pittsburgh Penguin and now owner of the franchise, with a mission to search for a cure for cancer after he himself had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. His goal is more important than his entire career and will bear no cost in achieving his goal. The Mario Lemieux Foundation seeks any help that they can get to be able to achieve their goal of finding the cure for cancer, and the Sport management Association wants to do their part in the creation of a success story. Though Mario Lemieux is celebrated as being one of the greatest players hockey has ever seen, winning the Stanley Cup and many more awards during his career, his biggest win was off the ice when he won his battle against Hodgkin’s disease. He had won his battle, and even returned to the ice following, but had never lost sight of the resources that he has to be able to help others in need. His battle has inspired him that all families who face similar situations can be given hope and support. The Sport Management Association wishes to help Mario Lemieux and the Mario Lemieux Foundation give this hope to families in need. Solution Considering Mario Lemieux being one of the greatest sport icons, the SMA sees that it would be best to obtain donations for the MLF through sports activities. The SMA is proposing a long-lasting partnership with the MLF, one where the SMA can use the foundation’s name and image in small college events where young students can see the importance and learn about the MLF while performing fun activities. In this case, the SMA is proposing a partnership in their annual Dodge the Dark Fundraiser event. The SMA will use some of their budget, along with small donations from a multitude of businesses and the MLF to put on a fun event of glow in the dark dodgeball, where all proceeds are to be donated to the foundation. About the Problem Being a small organization from Robert Morris University, the SMA is fortunate enough to have a good following where they can put on events for on campus students to enjoy and know that their money is going towards a great cause. The SMA is only able to draw in a small amount, in comparison to the number of donations the MLF gives on a yearly basis, but their donation would mean the most to those families who would be fortunate enough to receive this gift. The amount that the organization would be able to give would hopefully be enough to help even just one family who is in need. Rationale and Benefits The MLF should consider this partnership with the SMA as there is absolutely no risk to the foundation, as well as a new channel of communication for the MLF to drive their mission

4 into the young minds of college students who can make a real difference in the lives of those in need. Through Dodge the Dark, and many other small events held by the SMA, the foundation has everything to gain from the proceeds they will be receiving. There is no risk towards the foundation, as they are not held responsible should anything happen at such an event. The foundation will also gain form the publicity they will be receiving at these events, while they may be only attended by the students of the university, multiple raffle events are spread out among the vast community for everyone to see what they might win, and where their money is being donated, the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Management Major Tasks There are multiple moving pieces throughout the planning and organizing phases of the event, in addition to come actual game day and the follow-up on what went well and what could be done differently to better the event for the next one. Each executive board member of the SMA holds an important role in the execution of the event. The director as well as team leaders in the fields of marketing, sponsorship, and operations have their own goals to achieve. The marketing team has been put in place to make advertisement to draw in attention to the event. An example of this is shown below: The sponsorship team is set out to obtain donations from local businesses either monetary to help the event be put on, or in the form of physical goods that can be given out as raffle prizes at the event. The operation team is set to make sure there are set rules, lined courts, dodgeballs and blacklights are in working order, a bracket is made up, and that the event runs smooth and is executed at its best. Deliverables The MLF will be kept up to date on all milestones achieved and sponsors gained from the event. The MLF is receiving only the best efforts from all members included in the process of putting on the event. In addition will receive all marketing that is created by the SMA to be used however they wish to use it. At the conclusion of the event, all proceeds made will be given to the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Project Schedule Shown in the timeline below is the start-to-end dated timeline for Dodge the Dark. Initial meetings start at the end of the fall and beginning of the spring RMU semesters. The date of the event is set for March 1.

6 From the work breakdown structure, you can see each individual’s primary job from the smaller box below the name. Each individual also has supportive jobs which are those below them in the work breakdown structure. For example, Jeremiah Brosovic’s primary job is Planning, but also supervises and supports operations, food and drinks, volunteers, rulemaking, event set up, and risk management. Related experience The SMA has been performing the Dodge the Dark fundraiser event for almost six years, with the last three years being put on directly by the same executive board members who are here today. These board members have expertise on how this event should be run to maximum efficiency. In addition, some of the board members have outside work experience of how to run events in a professional setting. One example is Vice President Jeremiah Brosovic, in his work experience he has run events as a Sales an Operations Intern at RevelXP, as well as being a Lead Brand Ambassador for the Pittsburgh Steelers for two years, where he has helped put on countless charitable events. Equipment and Facility All equipment that is to be used is already owned by the SMA, which includes the following: blacklights, glow in the dark dodgeballs, fluorescent tape, speakers with microphone, tables, baskets, and other small items to be used in the operation. The facility to be used is the RMU Recreation Center, located on campus at RMU. There is no cost to use the facility, the SMA simply must give the Facility Manager enough time in advance to have the center closed for the event to go on. Cost Labor and Materials There are no labor costs for the event as each worker in the SMA is serving as a volunteer. All volunteers that are working at the event are a part of the Sport Management Association. In past years the SMA has purchased time to have the Pittsburgh Penguins mascot Iceberg at the event but that is up for debate if we will continue to do so. Luckily, the SMA already has the majority of materials needed to be put on the event, so the only materials that may need purchased would be to replace old and broken things. The only things needed to be purchased are small items, such as picture frames, tablecloths, napkins, plates, and so on. Equipment and Facility All equipment that is being used is either already purchased from prior events or is being donated by members to be used. Examples of already purchased equipment include dodgeballs, blacklights, and fluorescent tape. Should any new equipment need to be purchased, this cost will be put on the SMA. Items that are being donated include the speaker with microphone, tables, and other small items. The gym at the RMU Recreation Center is free to use, the SMA simply has to put in a request to book the center at an early date so that we will be the only people utilizing the facility at the time of the event.

7 Travel and Documentation The organization will use their own budget to help pay for the gas used for volunteers to pick up food and drink. There are no costs to the organization on document materials such as printing flyers, making advertisements, and making reports. Escalation As we strive to expand this event year by year the costs will likely go up slightly. At this moment we are only utilizing sources that have little or no cost for the organization. In future years, we may end up using a new facility or making bigger contributions that will cost more for what will hopefully be a bigger gain. Reserve and Profit There is a small reserve of the SMA budget that is set aside to be used for last minute necessities, such as if we run out of food at the event. All profit form the event is to be donated directly to the Mario Lemieux Foundation, with a goal of this to reach and exceed $1,500. References
