Event Planning: My Opinion R. Shaw Introduction One may define event planning as managing and/coordinating events that brings the visions of the customer to life. Some events may include weddings, conferences, baby showers, tradeshows, etc. In reference to my preferences, I would like to plan a wedding, as well as a baby shower. I would like to start planning events here in Tallahassee, FL or in the surrounding counties such as Jefferson county or Gadsden county. Within three years from me graduating from Florida State University, I want to have planned one wedding and one baby shower. I would plan the events by posting in various groups on social media to see if they are looking for someone to plan either their wedding or baby shower. From there, when I am chosen, I will meet with the clients to see what they want and how they want their special day to go. We will discuss the details for the event such as the theme, number of guests, venue, food, etc. I would like to plan a wedding event because I want to one day plan my own wedding and I want it to be spectacular, which is why I want to have enough practice and experience so that my special day will be everything that I have ever dreamed of. Furthermore, I would like to plan an event that is a baby shower because those events are very popular. I know that I can build a large clientele from individuals here and the surrounding counties in hopes to expand to different cities and states based on how well my event planning skills are noticed, liked, and appreciated. Background Just recently, over the course of the last six months I took a liking to event planning. I had the opportunity of planning my own baby shower, which spurred my interest in event planning. I enjoyed every minute of it. I set a date and time, found a venue, then sent invitations out to the individuals that I wanted to participate. From there, I had to decide on the theme, which I found to be a very hard thing to do. I changed the theme of my baby shower about four 1

I came to realize that although you have a set theme in mind, you must take into consideration the amount of decorations that you can discover that fits the theme. This was one of the biggest problems that I encountered when it came to choosing a set theme. Once the theme was set in stone, I focused all of my attention on the food that would be served, the games that will be played along with the prizes for those who won, the layout of the chairs and tables. On the night before the event, we put up the decorations and set and arranged the tables and chairs. On the day of the event, I arrived early to set up the food table and the last minute decorations that I had. Once the event started and everyone was seated, I took a moment to admire the work that I had done and was very pleased with the successful outcome. 2

Event Planning: My Opinion R. Shaw Theme and Details My main focus as an event planner would be satisfying my clients to the best of my ability. I will primarily focus on the theme and every specific details that my clients want to have incorporated into their special event. Furthermore, if I were to offer my services to the public, I would name my company Michelle’s Special Event Planning. The special services I will offer would include weddings, baby showers, parades and parties. I would first start to offer my services here in Tallahassee, FL until I have built enough clientele to be to and get recommended across the various states, cities, and counties such as Los Angeles, CA, Atlanta, GA, New York, NY, etc. This would allow me to become a traveling event planner, which is my ultimate goal of becoming a successful traveling event planner. I think that my business would be special to others because they I will offer popular and most recommended services that continuously happen every month, day, and week. I will provide the clients with business cards and a portfolio of previous events that I managed so that they could see the exceptional work that I do as a mechanism to persuade them to allow me to plan and/or manage their special event. 3

Shaw Challenges Possible challenges that I may encounter as an event planner may be last many changes that the client may want to make, which could potentially through the entire event off course. This will not only result in the customer not being satisfied with their special event, but negative reviews about your skills and your ability to meet and fulfill the demands of the consumer. Another possible challenge I could face as an event planner is having clients that does not know what they want or provide you with too little information to generate ideas from in order to produce a successful outcome. When this happens, I must try to get the potential client to tell me the purpose of their potential event so that I can make the appropriate suggestion of options in order to bring the customers ideas to reality and keep the successful ratings of my company. One last challenge an event planner could potentially face would be procrastination. Time is of the essence when it comes to planning events. The smallest delay when it involves the detail of the event could cause the event planner to be pushing for time. For example, say the customer wants custom white table cloths for their, but then change it to the custom red table cloths that were currently out of stock, but will be in stock one week before the expected event date. As the event planner, I would be pressing for time knowing that it usually take roughly a week for the items to be received, but will try everything in my ability to get the table cloths in within a reasonable time frame such as paying for expedited shipping or having to personally pick them up myself if it is within a reasonable traveling distance. This is a prime example why it is important to inform the clients on how keeping their details of their event the same without having to make any massive last minute changes because it could alter their entire vision and goal of their event. Event Planning: My Opinion R. Shaw Moreover, the benefits of my events would be to build my clientele and meet the satisfaction of the customer. From these events, I hope to accomplish getting recognized by my keen eye for details, my time management skills, my creativeness, and my ability to produce and manage successful event outcomes. I would pursue such an endeavor because this is something that I have always dreamed of doing so if I am given the opportunity to show everyone what I am capable of doing. I will show them that I am capable of successfully accomplishing everything that is given to me in order to prove that I am worthy enough to trust with managing their events. All in all, based on my skills, knowledge, and abilities, I know that I will be successful and conquer what I put my mind to in the future. 5
