Valerie Lopez Profile of Effective Two-Way Bilingual Teaching: Sixth Grade 1. What type of bilingual program is being profiled in this video? The bilingual program being profiled in this video is a 2-way language immersion program. 2. Who are the students? How long do they stay in the program? The students in the video are sixth graders. Depending on how long the students were in the program, many students were in the program since kindergarten so it could be 7 years. 3. What languages are used in the classroom? How are the languages allocated to tasks? The languages being used in the classroom are English and Spanish, morning tasks are taught in Spanish and afternoon tasks are taught in English. They do not mix the languages. 4. Describe the language abilities of the teacher. The teacher seems to be skillful in both the English and Spanish language. I like the way she will never translate for a student, but asks questions in simpler terms or different ways until the student understands. 5. What are the goals of this program? The goals of this program is to help students expand their vocabulary and linguistic markers for the language and the language’s culture being taught in the period. 6. How does the teacher make the languages/contents comprehensible to the students? How does she manage to offer a challenging, grade-level curriculum for L2 learners? The teacher uses different types of activities to offer different challenges to L2 learners. For example, she used a kaleidoscope activity which motivates the students to learn more Spanish among their peers. She also uses a teacher engaged activity involving the observation of a painting to help expand vocabulary and skills in the English language. 7. Two-way bilingual programs have been found to be the most effective program type for L2 learners in the most recent, comprehensive studies. Why do you think they are so effective in promoting both language development and success in other curriculum areas? I think bilingual programs are effective because it allows students to learn with their peers in a natural setting and less pressure. As the teacher said in the video, it’s amazing how much more knowledge and understanding can be added by working with peers. This can be seen when students are checking their narratives about the painting activity; many students start adding to their peers’ work.
