Second language acquisition is much easier for children to grasp than it is for adults. Therefore, languages should be taught starting with children at younger ages in order to increase fluency and acquisition. What is age of acquisition? Age of acquisition refers to the age at which something, in this case a language, is learned.
What is the “critical period”? The Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH) suggests that the first few years of life, sometime between age 5 and puberty, is when language develops easily. After the critical period, language acquisition is much more difficult. -192 children aged 3-5 were put in a room together and asked to play with toys and have conversations with each other. An average of 184.77 words were produced per child. -Adults in the early stages of learning Chinese were tested on basic grammar structure in Chinese. These adults struggled to grasp the concepts. Claim: It is easier for adults to learn a new language because their brains are more developed. Truth: The fact that children’s brains are not fully developed is the reason they are able to learn languages easier.
