Some general educators believe they do not have the time or the expertise to comply with the requirements on a student’s IEP. Explain how you, as the special education teacher, would educate and support such a teacher to best meet the needs of the student and ensure the legal compliance required for the execution of the I I feel as a teacher whether or not you are a special education teacher, you must have some knowledge to what an IEP is and how it benefits students who have one. With that being said, as a future special education teacher, I will make sure to collaborate with the general education teacher, parents, and all therapist, to best provide my students all their needs according to their IEP. It is very important to have everyone on board with all the student’s goals, progress, and any concerns. When collaborating with the general education teacher, I will make sure to go over the student’s IEP and explain their accommodations, I will emphasize the benefits to the student’s IEP, I will provide any resources to any free online training about what an IEP is and how it works, and I will make sure any questions or concerns they may have been answered. I will let the general education teacher know that An IEP (Individualized Education Program) is a written plan for students with identified disabilities which sets the conditions for the specific accommodations, materials, and instructional approaches needed in order for the students to learn effectively.”. (KU the University of Kansas, 2023). The way I will ensure legal compliance about an IEP is by, documenting all progress, make sure to communicate with parents, make sure to review the IEP and update it if needed, and monitor implementation to make sure the general education is aware of the student’s abilities, accommodations, and needs. By doing this, it gives the general education teacher an idea on how to plan lesson plans accordingly to the students with IEP’s.
