Module 1 Assignment
When it comes to doing research and solving a mystery during an investigation, there are many
tool factors that are used to help investigators solve the crime and capture the suspect. As the years
pass, technology has been evolving and so has the investigation units, they have tools that can detect a
person’s blood, and human fluids, and lasers that can draw out how the incident occurred and point
them in the right direction. Even though their technology can be of use, it doesn’t necessarily complete
the work or solve the mystery as it can sometimes create a wrongful conviction, however, this is where a
person’s skills and knowledge come into play. Besides the advanced technology that is used for cases, we
know one thing for sure that has helped them improve their cases which would be reading the
fingerprints.
It’s fascinating how effective the Automated Fingerprint Identification System, also known as the
AFIS has been for their cases. AFIS is a computer-based system where any person who is in the process
of booking would need to get their fingerprinting done which is stored in the database for future use if
they are involved in another crime. Not only do the investigators use this technology, but it’s being used
and operated at local, state, and international levels which has made a huge impact on law enforcement
throughout the world.
While the AFIS was introduced back in the 1990s, it has been upgraded to include
additional segments such as live-scan fingerprints and photographs of the arrested which are then
uploaded and kept on record on several networks. Since the upgrades of adding other features, this has
helped investigators guarantee the safety of public spaces, reduce victimization, and hold suspects
accountable for their actions. As investigators do their part in using such technology as the AFIS, they
also have other tools that help them back up their results such as lie detectors which can measure the
person’s reactions based on their heartbeat, blood pressure, and other factors. These kinds of tools are
best used so they can prevent any wrongful convictions when doing their investigation at a crime scene
that is presented to them.
