Adriana Ayala, AJ Allison, Ali Faraj, Anixa Flores Chapter 7 Group 1 o What are drug courts? Drug courts are for people with substance abuse disorders where individuals do to a long- term drug rehabilitation program in lieu of a normal sentence. This is under court supervision to ensure the individuals follow their regimen and are on the path to recovery. These courts focus on treating the substance abuse over penalization. If the participants successfully finish their program they can have their criminal charges dismissed or expunged. https://ndcrc.org/what-are-drug-courts/ o What are the characteristics of drug courts compared to traditional courts in the United States? Drug courts deal with non-violent drug-related offenses outside the traditional criminal justice prosecution tactics. Instead of being put into prison or jail with other offenders, you may get the addiction treatment you need. The goal of a drug court is generally to help the offenders increase the likelihood of rehabilitation and reduce recidivism and substance abuse in offenders.   Traditional courts resolve disputes according to customary law in a manner that should promote justice. They provide communities with dispute-resolution mechanisms and focus on the implementation of restorative justice. As to drug courts, they give you the help you need and in traditional courts, they help you resolve the problem by facing the offender. Both give you help to fix the problem but in drug courts, you are given many chances such as you won’t go to jail if you follow what you are told, in traditional courts you are in jail or prison already and are given a chance to fix the problem by facing it by speaking to those affected. One of these the harm was done already the other one is preventing harm to be done. https://kaplanmarino.com/criminal-law/the-differences-between-drug-courts-and- traditional-courts/ o What are the major reasons for the rise of drug courts in the United States? Be brief.  Anxiety, stress, materialism, moral degradation, and lack of proper guidance have caused a rise in the number of substance abuse cases. Drug courts are specialized court docket programs that target criminal defendants and offenders, juvenile offenders, and parents with pending child welfare cases who have alcohol and other drug dependency problems. Recreational substances use has become a fashion statement, and it has become too easy to acquire and use narcotics or alcohol unlawfully without knowing of side effects and social consequences associated with this obsession.
