Running head: ETHICAL ISSUES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT 2 Abuse of authority, excessive force, racial profiling and many more are just some examples of the ethical issues that arise almost everywhere and every day in law enforcement. Officers should be using the least amount of force to resolve or de-escalate a situation instead of doing everything possible to escalate it (Brown, 2021). In which community policing comes into play as well, if those unethical officers were looking to connect with their community, they could better unspecified how to assist them especially in an emergency. Officers are there to help those that cannot help themselves not hinder them even more. The importance of communication in the field is to help the community feel safer and the officers as well while they help to protect the community. The characteristics of police professionalism include loyalty, honesty, and bravery. When you have confident officers that understand what is needed from them, that love to help people, that helps to build public support. Police abuse happens when there are limited witnesses. The story is going based of either one point of view being the officers or both parties. These incidents also involve a few unjust power seekers who were corrupt before they became officers. (Fitch, 2011) Unfortunately, this interpretation fails to explain how other extraordinary officers with no prior history of wrongdoing, many of whom are sterling role models in their families, churches, and communities, can become involved in misconduct. These officers get a wrong path dangled in their face taking them down a one-way street. It is like a never-ending loop that just falls down into the new oncoming officers, one person influences the next person. A lot more actions need to be taken to hinder this effect. Some ethical issues in today’s era of policing are the excessive use of force, police brutality and racial profiling. These ethical issues seem to be the main reason community policing will never be the same. The community does not want to look out for someone that

When excessive force is used to resolve a situation, an officer has broken his ethical responsibilities. Department leaders should deal with these issues by enforcing better training, actually giving real disciplinary actions to those that feel above the law. (Brown, 2021) It is hard to grasp why some officers put on the uniform and feel they have a shield of I can do what I want and answer to no one. Watching some videos in today's society is very disturbing and disappointing. The only way any difference can be made is to address these ethical issues from within. The more patient and understanding people that are joining the force to actually help and do better and set their personal issues aside is a big step to change. Facing these ethical issues as an individual of color is a challenge within itself. Everyone has a different encounter with officers. Even if it were the same officer that just gave you a ticket or told you off could turn around and be all of a sudden nice to the next unknown if it will be pertaining to skin color. Hopefully there’s always that one encounter that displays that needed change to actually better an officer and the community. If more community policing like more foot patrols, were present and the inflation costs went down, there would be a lot less crime. When an officer utilizes excessive force, that trust within the community is broken, which can have lasting consequences. (Brown, 2021) When people do not trust officers as much, they may no longer seek help from an officer, which can leave a community vulnerable to criminal activity. An officer’s integrity is critical not only for his own ethics but for the sake of the people he protects. Building that trust back with in a broken community is even harder than when it is first there, it is like a relationship broken promises that you are going to do right but the trust just will never be the same after that. As an officer the focus should be to protect and serve not serve yourself and look for a big come up through the criminals you are detaining. Life choices can weigh you down at times it is on them to make that choice for their family, integrity and themselves. Acting impartially can put everyone at risk. Loyalty plays a big part in your integrity, breaking that loyalty for a few extra bucks will not help in the future. The number of cases that are covered up to protect the integrity of those officers that broke the same laws they are enforcing for others to abide by is unprecedented. (Law birdie, 2023) Different Organizations play a big role in better training officers on serving the public. It starts from the source and when the source creates a positive work environment that will show through policing the community should not be affected. In conclusion, ethical issues are a major issue in law enforcement and should be better addressed. As well as the racial profiling and police brutality should be minimized as much as much as possible. There should not be a compromise on ethical standards, these standards are set in place same way the laws are put in place to keep order in these states. How will there be any order if the enforcers of the laws are breaking them as well. Maintaining loyalty, honesty and integrity can potentially be hard for some officers especially if their off-duty life is difficult. (Law birdie, 2023) Being able to uphold those ethical standards is challenging when presented with an opportunity of wrongdoing that’s seem far greater than the current situation, they are dealing with. Programs and communicating those issues can potentially help these officers to better manage their behavior and get their situations resolved. Department leaders should focus on better training in regard to ethics in law enforcement, breaking down the issues and the consequences of breaking those ethical issues.
