Report
A fifteen-year-old boy was apprehended using a gun to rob a convenience shop. Fortunately, nobody was harmed when the child threatened the cashier. There is no past record for the offender. When the police saw him running, he did not fight arrest upon being arrested. The boy's father is currently incarcerated for assault. The boy recalls his father being intoxicated and belligerent prior to being incarcerated. The boy’s mother works two jobs and has to leave him home unsupervised in order to work and provide for him. His grandmother supervised the boy until she passed away a year ago. The juvenile had good attendance in school when he was being supervised by his grandmother however after the grandmother passed away the juvenile has been suspended from school as well as frequently truant. The offender did admit to the holding up the convenience store but he won't elaborate on how he came to obtain the gun. The classification for the type of offense this juvenile was guilty of was larceny. They don’t tell how much money the boy took in the crime so one cannot identify whether it was petty or grand larceny. In most circumstances, theft is deemed petty larceny and may result in misdemeanor charges if the total value of the taken items is $500 or less. Theft of items valued more than $500 is regarded as grand larceny and is subject to felony prosecution. The dollar amounts vary from state to state. I would advise a six-month confinement in juvenile detention with the possibility of an early release contingent upon good behavior as a short-term strategy. I decided on that particular short-term strategy because this is a far more serious crime because a firearm was used in the committing of the crime. After being released from juvenile detention, the offender can waive their fines because of their low income or that of a single parent. In addition to probation, the juvenile will be required to perform 100 hours of community service within a year. If he doesn't follow through, he will risk breaking his probation and going to jail. In terms of a long-term strategy, I would suggest counseling for the death of his grandma, his parents' absence, and coping with a parent who recently committed the same violent crime and is now incarcerated. A longer period of juvenile detention would result without counseling. The juvenile will be placed on probation until the age of eighteen after being released from juvenile detention. Truancy is a violation of probation, juvenile must attend and finish school. If truancy occurs again, the offender may be placed under house arrest or returned to juvenile detention. Additionally, until the age of 18, mandate regular social service checks, and schedule monthly meetings with his probation officer every three months.
