SPEECH TITLE
Purpose: To persuade politicians to reinforce the already existing laws through
amendments to strengthen background checks, ban the ownership of military
ammunition by common citizens, and ensure extreme risk protection orders are
available in virtually all states.
Thesis: Strengthening background checks, banning the sale & ownership of military
ammunition by ordinary citizens, and ensuring extreme risk protection orders are key
interventions that will help to mitigate mass shootings.
I. Introduction
A.
Attention getter
According to Alfonesca (2023) as of May 1, this year about 13,500 citizens have
succumbed to gun violence in America. Of those who died, 489 were teenagers and 84
were children.
B.
Credibility statement
The grim tally of the mass violence using firearms shows that it is high time that we
should implement stronger laws supporting background checks, banning the sale&
ownership of military weapons by common citizens, and ensuring there is stringent
extreme risk protection orders.
C.
Specific Purpose
The speech addresses the elected officials in the democratic and republic wings to
shun away from their divergent views concerning gun control debate. They should
unanimously support the implementation of stringent gun control laws that will
directly address the issue of mass shooting.
D.
Thesis statement
Strengthening background checks, banning the sale & ownership of military
ammunition by ordinary citizens, and ensuring extreme risk protection orders are key
interventions that will help to mitigate mass shootings.
E.
Preview of main points
2
We need to have stringent laws that fortify background checks, proscribe the sale
&ownership of military weapons by common citizens, and ensure risk protection
orders are available in all states.
II. Body
A. Main point #1
The first point is to ensure extreme risk protection orders are available in virtually all
states.
1.
Subordinate point
Extreme risk protection orders offer a key tool for household members and policing
authorities to intervene and avert potential blood baths.
2.
Subordinate point
EPRO regulations are meant to offer a constitutional tool for law enforcement
authorities to intervene when there are warning signs that someone is in possession of
a firearm and has a great risk of harming themselves or others.
3. Subordinate point
In states that have not implemented risk protection orders, there are few options
accessible for household members and domestic police authorities to avert individuals
exhibiting such signs from possessing the firearm. In a nutshell, it is paramount that
EPRO laws are made available in all states.
B. Main point #2
Stronger and more effective background checks
1.
Subordinate point
A divided political discourse permits individuals to procure a firearm without a
background check and with no interrogations.
2.
Subordinate point
Based on the existing federal regulation, some persons are barred from procuring and
possessing firearms for grounds like felony conviction, and lack of commitment in
mental health treatment.
3
3.
Subordinate point
Although the current background checks are sufficient; there is still a big gap in the
regulations that permits unlicensed seller- like private persons who market guns
virtually, without any background checks. In a nutshell, more amendments are
supposed to be done in the existing background checks to ensure that private persons
are not allowed to sell guns virtually without doing background checks.
C. Main point #3
Ban the sale and possession of assault weapons to ordinary citizens.
1.
Subordinate point
Ammunition rifles or weapons must not have a place in our society or communities.
2.
Subordinate point
Assault weapons and high-capacity magazines dramatically surge the cruelty of
shooting, contributing to more individuals being shot and leading to more deaths.
3. Subordinate point
A study conducted in 2017 revealed that assault weapons and firearms contributed to
about 35 percent of firearms used for crime. In a nutshell, we should completely ban
the sale and possession of assault rifles from reaching our community.
III. Conclusion
A. Clarifying:
Ensuring risk protection orders are available in all states, and ensuring there is
stronger background checks will help to address the ballooning rate of mass violence
caused by firearms.
B. Enlighten:
This piece of information serves as a wake-up call for politicians and legal
representatives in the U.S. to ensure these interventions are implemented to address
the rate of mass violence.

Sponsor bills that will reinforce on the aforementioned interventions and ensure they
are passed and implemented immediately.
C. Review:
The politicians must ensure they reinforce the already existing laws through
amendments to strengthen background checks, ban the ownership of military
ammunition by common citizens, and ensure extreme risk protection orders are
available in virtually all states.
D.
Invite: Call us to action (immediate action or passive agreement)
I call the politicians and legal representatives to take action and Sponsor bills that will
reinforce on the aforementioned interventions to ensure we address the protracted
issue of gun violence.
