Certified Specialist Business Intelligence (CSBI) Reflection Part 5 CSBI Domain V: Analytical and Quantitative Skills
Ability to understand and moderately apply concepts in:
Statistics – a set of methodologies for dealing with data and turning it into usable information for making decisions
Measures of central tendency – the value of the point where half of the data is larger and half of the data is lower in value than that point. The data that occurs with the greatest frequency
Probability and distributions – measure or estimation of how likely it is that something will happen.
Sampling - data set used to make inferences about the entire population
The basis of correlation and regression analysis
Common mistakes to avoid - The common mistakes made in business analytics are:
Sophistication compensating for a lack of data
Difficulty isolating and explaining patterns shown by data
Equating correlation with causation
Engage the rudiments of experimental design
An experiment is needed to ensure the change is indeed significant, the improvement is not just random positive variation, and the new procedure is not a waste of resources. The
experiment provides insight into true cause-and-effect by demonstrating what outcome occurs when a particular factor is manipulated.
Understand the basics of visual analytics interpretation
Visual analytics uses visual perception as a way to involve humans in solving complex problems with data.
Seeking opportunities and problems
Steven Covey said people often lose sight of what is important in the daily rush of taking care of urgent matters. Organizations are no different, and in complex ones such as hospitals and other large-scale healthcare providers, difficulties may be amplified. There are high volumes of activity, change, and so much data to look at. The method, a prioritization matrix, is an extension and combination of the "Areas of Significance for Analytic Application"(ASAA) and decision types.

Framing problems / questions – including key items ~ variables, previous similar
problems / questions addresses
The question to be addressed is one of utilization: Did fewer

cases as a percentage of all possible cases in the area (pediatric population) present for ED treatment after the UCC was opened as compared to a similar timeframe before the UCC opening? Here one
has an appropriate control to examine the result of a change—what were things like before the change (the UCC opening)? The belief, of course, is that the addition of the UCC would have a significant impact on lowering the number of cases presenting to the ED.
Answer / Solution Development
Pinpointing How To Best Allocate Patient Resources—provide clear demonstrations of how organizations and leadership are cultivating an understanding that data found in a variety of specific systems, such as the EHR, patient accounts, and payer and contracting systems, can be used to develop methods of detecting patterns and taking action.
Translating business operations into meaningful analytic structures
O
ur understanding of a healthcare user needs to change, as the analytic structure in an ACO world is longitudinal back and forth across the healthcare continuum due to responsibility for
individuals falling more within this much different and larger framework. This broader view will be needed to combine clinical and financial information for better decisions to successfully operate the new ACO entity.
Describe what you learned from the Domain.
What I learned from this domain was that analysis is key in business intelligence. I also learned how with charts , it makes it easier to understand and interconnect different processes and tools and statistics showing how business intelligence works.
Describe how you may apply the information in your current or future career.
In my future career I will definitely be utilizing analytics, statistics, and definitely DELTA. I would like to have a facility or work for a facility where the mission/goals are met, by using analytics and practicing the use of DELTA. Everyone must work together and bring in ideas that will create change for the better. Patients will also see a difference and feel as if their care is of importance to us. Patient satisfaction and well being is the ultimate goal.
