(Long URL: https://share.tafensw.edu.au/share/items/e0c16888- 10e6-4c4b-a728-47b2952dc7f4/0/?attachment.uuid=43fa65e6-bdc2-4306-825a- 436cedbda14f) You work as an Assistant at the Reference Desk of a library for example Azure Beach Public Library . You have received the following email from Pablo Marchant, the Library Coordinator, who needs your help conducting several database searches on his behalf. Marchant, Pablo From: Marchant, Pablo Sent: Thursday, 4 January 2024 09:08 AM To: Reference Desk Subject: Database searches for information requests Good morning I really need your help getting through a backlog of information requests from three customers. I was originally handling them but have run out of time! I am going to need you to do database searches to help the following customers with their information requests. Here are the comprehensive notes I took from my discussions with them. 1. Member of Azure Beach community - Amelia Stone (stonea@scottish.com) I’m not sure if you have met one of our regular customers Amelia Stone. She has become really intrigued with Battle of Culloden and her Scottish ancestry and is looking for more information on this. Have a listen to her original phone request or read transcript – Appendix 1 to get the background. She is now looking for further information on the Battle of Culloden from journal articles as she is going to be delivering a talk her history group at The University of the Third Age next week. She needs the information by 12 noon tomorrow. 2. HSC student - Tom Yeo (tommy@schoolA.com.au) Tom needs information to complete a project. He wants to investigate the construction process and materials used in the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the impact the bridge had on society and its environment. It is due at the end of this term. He has been told by his teacher that if he uses Wikipedia, he will not pass the project. His teacher Document title: BSBINS404 _AE_Sk 2of2 Page 9 of 21

wants them to be using databases but has not explained why databases are needed for the project 3. Psychology tutor - Farouk Abdullah (FaroukA@collegeB.com.au) Farouk is a Psychology tutor at a nearby college. His students have begun studying Jean Piaget’s theory on the four stages of cognitive development in children. He mentioned his knowledge of the topic is ‘rusty’ and sounded anxious to learn more about this topic by the end of the weekend. He is interested in Piaget’s background and has asked that we source journal articles from 2017 to the present day that cover the four stages of child development. You will need to: find information for all three customers using the ABPL Search Strategy Form (Long URL: https://share.tafensw.edu.au/share/items/e9b48a7a-4f90-4144-bac4- 5adf10114c3e/0/?attachment.uuid=0c83b966-9695-4687-8098-5c2c6dbf98cf ), or as advised by your teacher, and Bibliographic Record Sheet , or as advised by your teacher. (Long URL: https://share.tafensw.edu.au/share/items/e9b48a7a-4f90-4144-bac4-5adf10114c3e/0/? attachment.uuid=b153a8da-cc0b-4d33-a9d5-4b43b90bfa73) Perform your search using the following three databases: Trove , National Library of Australia (Long URL: https://trove.nla.gov.au/) State Library of NSW (Long URL: https://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/) TAFE Library eResources (Long URL: https://tafensw.libguides.com/libraryinfoservices/eresources) When you are done, send me all of the relevant information. Please include a paragraph for me to send to Tom explaining why we use databases over web searches. As I am really busy, I sometimes miss emails so please leave me a voice message to let me know when you’re done. Thank you so much for helping out with these requests. Kind regards, Pablo Marchant Document title: BSBINS404 _AE_Sk 2of2 Page 10 of 21

I’d love to know more about my Scottish heritage. I’m planning a trip back to Scotland to trace my family, do some heritage stuff. I’ve done some Googling, but I’d like to know what the library has too. I’m really interested in the battle of Cull… the battle of Col… oh how do you say it? The Battle of Culloden! (that was in Outlander!!). The Jacobite uprising, that was pretty good, and the part that that guy plays, oh you know…. Uumm oh “The Bonnie Prince Charlie” – he had something to do with it. I’m really looking for rare archive stuff.. maybe it might be in Scotland, I don’t know. Do you have any info on libraries or museums I could visit that know more about the battle? Battle of Culloden. Anyway, I leave in three weeks. It would be great to have this info at least one week before I go if not sooner. And I’d really like it so I can download it to my iPad, or connect to it via wifi when I’m at the airports. If you could send me this info in an email that’d be great. Thanks, bye!
