Week 6 Assignment: Pirates of Silicon Valley Response 1. Who is UC Berkeley’s Captain Crunch and what did he have? What did Woz and Jobs make from it? UC Berkeley’s Captain Crunch was John Draper. He was known for discovering a toy whistle in Captain Crunch cereal that could emit a tone of 2600 hertz, which allowed him find a weakness in the phone system to exploit. Draper used the whistle to make free long distance phone calls. Woz and Jobs made “blue boxes” from this discovery, which were devices in which could imitate the whistle’s tone, letting users make free long distance calls. 2. What was the Home Brew Club? The Home Brew Club were technically minded hobbyists focused on one of the earliest computers, the Altair 8800. The Home Brew Club was where computer enthusiasts gathered to share ideas and discuss all things computers, as well as demonstrating their own products. The club attracted those who were looking to discover and experiment with new concepts for existing technologies. 3. What computer did Allen and Gates write operating code for while still at Harvard? Allen and Gates wrote operating code for the BASIC programming language for Altair 8800 while still at Harvard. The work that they were doing was pivotal for the foundation of Microsoft as it laid the groundwork for future endeavors. 4. Compare and contrast Apple and Microsoft products as of 2022. As of 2022, both Apple and Microsoft continue to be major players in the technology industry, but they have differentiated themselves through different product offerings and philosophies. Apple is known for their Apple ecosystem and the integration of hardware and software. They have priorities in their user experience, designs, and ecosystem coherence. They really strive to have a seamless experience amongst all their devices. Whereas, for Microsoft, they focus heavily on software, like their Windows operating system. They have many applications such as Mircosoft Office, Xbox gaming, and Azure cloud computing. While both companies offer a range of products, Apple emphasizes the integration between software and hardware, while Mircosoft focuses on software compatible with various hardware configurations.
