2.5 Assignment: Cloud Testing Services Nessus is a widely used vulnerability assessment tool developed by Tenable, Inc. It is designed to help organizations identify and mitigate security vulnerabilities within their network infrastructure, servers, and applications. Nessus is a vulnerability scanner, that scans networks or systems for potential vulnerabilities that could be exploited by attackers. Nessus scans both local and remote networks to identify any vulnerabilities, which includes servers, workstations, and network devices. Users can customize scan policies to tailor the scanning process to their specific requirements. This feature is great because you can set scan targets and determine the scan frequency. Nessus integrates with other security tools and platforms, such as Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems, ticketing systems, and workflow automation tools, to streamline vulnerability management processes (Jaiswar, 2023). Nessus also scans for misconfigurations which was surprising to me, I learned this about the tool as research this tool. Nessus assigns severity levels to identified vulnerabilities based on their potential impact and likelihood of exploitation, this help allows companies to prioritize which vulnerabilities need to be migrated quicker than the others. Nessus is developed and provided by Tenable, Inc., which offers several billing and pricing options. Nessus Professional pricing is typically based on an annual subscription model, with the cost determined by factors such as the number of IP addresses or assets being scanned. Pricing for Nessus Manager is usually based on factors such as the number of scanner licenses and the level of technical support required. Pricing for Nessus Cloud is typically based on factors such as the number of assets being scanned, the frequency of scans, and additional premium features. Another thing that was shocking to me was learning that Tenable offers a free version of Nessus which is referred to as Nessus Essentials, when is just the basic vulnerability scanning capabilities which is more ideal for individuals or small environments but this does limit the number of address that can be scanned.
