Project Two: Presentation Planning Cyb 400 Adrienne Johnston SNHU
Presentation Planning: Approach Any challenge to communication is trying to convey understanding to an audience of content otherwise foreign to them. Why should they care? How can you reach your audience and impart enthusiasm in them about your topic? On the best of days, the audience will have some familiarity about the subject matter and your only challenge is keeping them interested, but sometimes you need to explain something only really you understand as well as keep their attention. If your goal is to bring meaningful understanding to a wide-eyed group of people, be prepared to deliver it in a creative and digestible manner. Presentation Planning: Strategies We are tasked with presenting Grey Matter’s board of directors the results of a security assessment conducted on our recently acquired company, BrainMeld’s, network and computer assets as well as the steps required to remediate the substandard results discovered. Server vulnerabilities and updates, enumeration reports, and asset licensure are meaty, complicated subjects, not to mention mind numbingly dry to the average layperson. In order to keep eyes forward, interested, and involved, the presenter must use creative tools to drive their point home. Analogies can be especially useful in this instance along with the use of stories, personal or otherwise. These can help the audience identify and connect with the content in order to understand it. We will stay away from buzzwords, abbreviations, and acronyms, although some creatively created acronyms can sometimes help the audience remember key concepts. Get the audience involved, don’t just talk the whole time, give them an opportunity to ask questions. Some people would rather not ask questions out loud, fearing a lack of understanding will make them sound silly, so pass out cards at the beginning of presentation and collect them towards the conclusion. Anonymously read questions aloud and discuss. Lastly, and most importantly, don’t
forget the takeaway. It’s critical the audience understand why they’re there and the importance of the information. If your presentation was crafted well, you should be able to lead the audience throughout in a clear and concise manner, leading to the main point. Visual Aid Brainstorming: Information The meat and potatoes of the presentation covers pretty technical subject matter that will more than likely only make sense to specifically trained individuals, results from an assessment that was performed by Grey Matter’s IT department. Upon completion of BrainMeld’s existing network infrastructure, The Windows SMB (service message block) Server has a remote code execution vulnerability (MS15-034). This issue could allow remote code execution if an attacker sends a specially crafted HTTP request to an affected Windows system. This is considered a high-risk vulnerability that could result in remotely situated attackers to run arbitrary code or cause a DDoS or bypass the authentication mechanism via brute force technique. This issue can be easily remediated by running an update from Microsoft. The other issue uncovered was an outdated employee password policy that can result leaving the network and its assets vulnerable to credential theft by determined individuals performing brute force attacks as well as social engineering attempts. The result would be a complete system compromise with endless possibilities of exposure. To remedy this, a new password policy must be drafted with specific guidelines not limited to but including password creation requirements, and time constraints around them. Two other matters that arose are service agreement licenses about to expire which will void technical help and update access to company assets as well as poor port management throughout network. The service agreements will need to be renegotiated or purchased and new protocols will need to be created for the management of used/open ports to ensure a more secure network.

Visual Aid Brainstorming: Visuals Suggested In order to bring Grey Matter’s board of directors up to speed with these critical issues and onboard with the relevant solutions, we will create 8-10 slides that explain the current situation and its remedy in a clear and engaging manner. Graphics that illustrate, in a simple way, what the affected components are, and how they effect the network holistically (also financially, of course), by illustrating a similar situation and the consequences using examples of something relatable to everybody. Clearly explain the steps required make the system whole and its advantages. Be clear about financial losses and gains, short and long term to give to board a more tangible way to visualize the subject matter. Keep the slides simple, clear, and not to busy to look at. Visual Aid Brainstorming: Messaging Creating a visual presentation is only the first step, making sure it makes sense and is easily digestible to a non-technical civilian, let alone the board of directors. Using examples, both verbally and visually, that can be relatable is suggested. For example, when explaining what a remote code attack is, perhaps use an example of how a person uses a remote-controlled car and how interference can knock it out of whack or how a CPU is like a heart. Use pictures with clear text to illustrate details and make distinct connections, and create custom acronyms to remember topics with ease.
