Cultural Awareness Guidebook
Identify your chosen scenario. School
Part One: Social Justice (Complete this section in Module Two.)
1.
Explain the difference between justice, fairness, and equality in the scenario.
Justice
refers to the fair and impartial treatment of individuals under the law.
Fairness
is about treating individuals equally and impartially without any discrimination of bias.
Equality
refers to the idea that everyone should be treated the same and receive the same resources, regardless of their differences and sometimes individual needs.
As an adult student, I have plenty of opportunities to apply social justice concepts in the classroom but knowing where to begin is a challenge. Social justice is linked to equity, diversity and inclusion efforts, hence the difficulty knowing where to begin.
The main thing is to look in the mirror and get comfortable with being uncomfortable!
2.
Describe how bias can influence your perception of social justice in the scenario.
Everybody has issues with being biased, I don’t really care who you are. I grew up in the south out in the country and not extremely close to any neighbors. Since I haven’t had a lot of experience anywhere besides out in the country my personal bias is very close-minded, more than I cared to admit before this. My perception of social justice probably doesn’t align with my classmates because being from the south and being white and Christian are things that I identify with that could all potentially cause me to be bias in many ways. 3.
Describe how different narratives in society can impact your perception of social justice.
Narratives in society put me in the mind of basically power and money. Some people think that by leveling society and putting some people in power and others lower and so on is the only way to make a society work. Others believe that everything should be fair, and equal. Personally, I believe that if we don’t have someone in power to make decisions then the world could potentially turn into complete chaos. I remember in school this used to be a really big deal when I was a child, some children had the best of the best and others didn’t have barely anything and I was somewhere in the middle. Narratives in reference to social justice I think can be looked at negative or positive ways. In reference to the classroom, we should all basically be on a level of fairness because for one we are all adults and for two we all have a common goal of educating and bettering ourselves in mind, it is no longer something that we are forced to do, we are all choosing to learn. The narrative of if I work
hard and get an education, I can create a better life for myself is the reason I’m doing so and probably several others like me!
4.
Describe the core principles of social justice in the scenario. The core principles of social justice are human rights, access to resources, equity, participation and diversity. First and foremost, school Is a great place to look at our core principles and how we think they pertain to social justice. We can exercise all these core principles by simply opening up ourselves to new possibilities and getting out of the closed mindsets that so many of us are in. As far as human rights, we all deserve the same basic human rights and they shouldn’t be violated at any cost whatsoever, like the right to freely speak our minds but we need to also choose to exercise the right to be respectful of others when speaking our minds. We need to be mindful to some people don’t have access to the same resources as others and things that I think is just something everyone should have might actually be a luxury that another don’t for instance some people may not be able to sit at home and do their homework, they may have to go to a café or library for internet access and a lot of us tend to take that for granted and assume that everyone has the luxury of sitting at home like I do. I need to use equity to give everyone the same opportunity to become my friend but exercise the knowledge that equity is not equality and therefore I don’t have to be good friends with every single person in the room I just need to give the opportunity to everyone in the room and then recognize that not all people are molded to be my friend. When it comes to participation, I look at it like I shouldn’t be worried about who said or posted or thinks what, instead I need to worry about what they’ve posted etc. and analyze it, for instance say I wanted the class to take a survey of their opinions for me, I wouldn’t ask them to put their names at the top of a survey. Lastly diversity, so easy but so tough, I think I just need to continue to practice being mindful of others and their differences and remind myself that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and feelings and it will likely get me further in more than just school but through my entire life.
Part Two: Intercultural Communication and Collaboration
Describe how you would demonstrate cultural fluency in the scenario.
Cultural fluency means that a person can effectively navigate different communication styles across cultures, they have an understanding of other customs, beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors. A culturally fluent person also understands their own behaviors and communication styles as well as being able to adapt to any setting using appropriate behaviors and communication.
A school setting is an extremely appropriate place to demonstrate cultural fluency and our methods into practice to show empathy. Personally I choose conflict number three because it most closely alignes with the way I see my life going in the near future. I’m currently experiencing some financial hardship and will soon be in search of part-time employment to assist in my financial issues, I already know that it will be difficult but I’m not going to be able to do one without the other.
1.
Describe how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness.
As a first year university student, I’ve definitely experienced some very unexpected and difficult demands a long the way this far. I am currently doing my best to maneuver them and
excel in my coursework and getting things turned in on time is starting to be a bit of a challenge at times. I have t even began part-time employment but if I refer to conflict number
three within the school scenario it suggests that I am having a conversation with a close friend about my difficulties juggling my job and my courses. My friend advised that I contact
my academic advisor, who can probably be of more help than most. This is also what would be considered the first step in any type of situation similar to my own. So when I meet with my academic advisor, she suggests that I quit my part-time employment so that I can focus solely on my education. My academic advisor is a part of a different culture than myself and so I tell myself that maybe this is why she don’t really understand that quitting my job is not an option because my job is what pays my tuition so that I can remain in school. The old Meche, before learning about cultures that are different from my own, and how important it is to be aware and respectful of them, I probably would’ve snapped at my advisor and told her that it must be nice to have the that luxury because in my culture the way I was raised, if you want something bad enough then you have to work for it. But instead I am able to recognize these differences in culture in a respectful and understanding way from the viewpoint of a culturally aware individual. This is when I’m privileged with the opportunity to demonstrate my understanding that her attitudes, behaviors, beliefs and customs don’t look exactly like mine do, quite frankly they are very different as far as education and how we pay for it and different socioeconomic statues go. Next, I precede to explain to her that I don’t have any other option if I want to continue my education because my part-time employment is what makes it even possible for me to do so. I tell her that I’m only able to afford my tuition because of this employment. Next, I ask the advisor if she knows of any other alternatives to quitting the job. I explain to get that I am part of the lower socioeconomic status and that my parents can’t afford to assist me financially what so ever. I explain to get that a major part of my values and beliefs come from an independence stand point, where like I stated above; if there is something you want bad enough in life, you’ll do whatever it takes to get it and that includes working for. In her position of employment I’m sure she has dealt with many different cultures and for a second I probably think to myself that she should already be familiar with my cultural values and beliefs but then I remind myself that it’s not for me to assume nor judge her level of cultural fluency or that she has had an experience at all with mine. Being culturally fluent means that I am aware of my values, beliefs, attitudes, customs and behaviors. The level of self-awareness it takes to be culturally fluent speaks for itself in someone’s level of communication and empathy for the person they are collaborating with. Truthfully, if we are in the presence of another human, they already identify differently than us, they actually differ from us in several ways therefore, we actually get the opportunity to not only practice cultural fluency but also improve our character all the time l. Being able to understand and communicate with others on all these different levels means I will improve at school, at work and just in everyday life in general. It also provides me with the opportunity to be a better mother and imprint positively on future generations. Self-awareness is the key to being a happier individual as well, because I’ll be able to experience other cultures from a position of understanding and openness vs. judgmental and negative. I’ll be able to make friends and enjoy different ways of life and I’ll be able to be a better therapist and student as well.

Describe how an awareness of other cultures can benefit interpersonal communication with people in the scenario. In the school setting scenario, my awareness of other cultures can benefit my interpersonal communication skills because it prepares me to avoid making assumptions about others outside my culture that I know may or may not be true. I would say that school is a group setting in where I assign myself to the traits and characteristics of self-monitoring. By being more aware of myself and my actions and reactions to conversations that involve diverse cultures, my interpersonal communication skills can only get stronger. In addition to helping
me avoid making assumptions, I can also ask the right questions, questions that because I’ve been educated in how to do so won’t feel offensive or derogatory to somebody outside of my culture. The questions I will ask will help me to clarify any questions that I have in a respectful manner.
3.
Describe how exposure to diverse backgrounds can positively influence communication in the scenario.
Exposure to diverse backgrounds can cause positive influence on my situation because I won’t be fearful
to ask the things I need to ask and to engage in the activities that need to happen in order for the cultures of my classmates and myself to intertwine. I will be able to explain my culture and where I’ve came from and my values and beliefs with confidence in them, but with my education I’ll be able to do this in a manner that isn’t offensive or judgmental to my peers. This exposure will help me throughout life because no matter where I end up, I’ll be experienced and prepared for whatever life throws at me. I
will be able to take a step back and put myself in the shoes of the other person. I’ll be able to take an interest in their differences instead of feeling like I don’t want to associate with them or deal with them because they are different from me. Lastly, but most importantly, I will finally be able to feel comfort in the uncomfortable, I believe that once you can master feeling comfortable with being uncomfortable you can move mountains for yourself and others.
4.
Explain why an awareness of diversity is beneficial to collaboration in the scenario. Now that I have developed a heightened awareness of diversity and tis impact on those around me as well as myself, I am able to turn it into a beneficial way to collaborate with my classmates. I’ll be able to communicate and collaborate with my classmates based on their personality and this will help me to figure out the best way to communicate with them. The main thing is that if I look for nonverbal cues and remain intentional about it I’ll be able to navigate the conversations I have with my classmates with ease. By being aware of my very own nonverbal cues, I can think about things that impact my written communication such as my facial expressions and my body language- If I pay close attention to the way I write these things and how I word them, it can help me tremendously in identifying how somebody who
wasn’t part of my culture might write the same response for instance. I can also think about the things that are less dominant as far as my identity and identities that I identify with, and by doing so the ones that are less dominant are also the ones that are more dominant for someone else and therefore contribute to somebody who is culturally different from myself. It’s not always the key to being aware of
diversity, I’ll be sure to make sure I note that right here but lots of times if you just think about what is opposite from you and your values and beliefs and social norms and gender etc. etc. anything that is
opposite from you, that makes you culturally different from them and therefore can be a start in helping
you benefit from collaborating with them. I started becoming better at this by going into a classroom and picking the person I thought was so completely opposite from myself and then started trying to make friends with them and getting to know them. Collaborating in conversation with people different from myself and intentionally picking them out and doing so by forcing myself to get comfortable with the things that would typically make me uncomfortable of the things that I would veer away from ironically has helped me to develop some truly amazing interpersonal communication skills that will benefit me for the rest of my life, not just in the school setting scenario that I chose for this assignment, but in any scenario or situation that I come across.
