Please watch the interview with Tami Erwin, executive vice president and CEO of Verizon Business and answer the following questions:
What has she done as a leader to strategize the impact of COVID?
Tami Erwin used the current infrastructure of Verizon to create an expanded network that would serve customers better. She also
implemented changes to the way people work that were improved. Due to the impacts of COVID-19, she was flexible and agile, which was a requirement given the shutdowns and regulations that were implemented.
In Karlgaard’s interview with Erwin he mentions the acceleration of digital transformation
for all businesses and industries that is moving two times faster than it was five years ago. He bases this off companies working together with cloud computing, edge computing, artificial intelligence, and now 5G. How does the company utilize these types of digital transformation, and how has it impacted the production even while in a pandemic?
The company was able to maintain business continuity while facing new, never-before-seen challenges presented due to COVID-19. This pandemic left companies no choice. They had to invest in digital transformation if they were going to stay successful and relevant in a new era. How can 5G technology impact supply management?
5G technology isn’t just a faster version of 4G technology. It is a whole new level of capacity. For example, 4G technology can effectively handle about 10,000 devices per square mile, while 5G can handle over a million. This means that 5G technology can offer companies better visibility across their supply chain while allowing them to leverage a single source of truth. 5G can impact global supply chains in these three ways: 1) Streamline Logistics Operations 2) Smart
Inventory and Warehouse Management and 3) Seamless Fleet Management Operations (

Erwin shared in the interview the importance of partnering with other large companies to accelerate the delivery of solutions on behalf of their customers. She went on to share the importance that the partners they work with deliver the same kind of quality of products and services that Verizon aspires to deliver to their customers. Do you see more companies today partnering with other companies to help deliver a higher-level service and bridge technology? Besides Verizon, what other companies have partnered with other large companies to bridge digital technology and offer a greater level of quality service to customers?
Companies do collaborate when there is a central focus that benefits someone. My favorite example of this is when companies focus on the needs of others. An example of this happened in 2021 when several companies came together to make an investment towards a goal to provide one million connected devices to students who did not have access to the basic tools needed to engage in digital learning. This was a great need in the fact of COVID-19 pandemic. The companies involved were P&G, CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, Dell Technologies, Intel,
Dow Jones, Fidelity, Microsoft Corp, PNC Bank, PolicyLink, Walmart, and Comcast. (n.d.)
How does Tami Erwin embody the Dhandho approach in her decision-making?
Erwin made investments in security and provided flexibility in payments to companies who were
struggling during the pandemic. She implemented new contracts and negotiated new terms to ensure her customers were able to continue receiving the services they needed. This embodied the Dhandho approach since she was making an investment that would provide returns to her in continued customer satisfaction and loyalty even after the pandemic was over. (N.d.).
