Virtual Machine Set-up
Lab 0:
Virtual
Machine
Set-up
Overview:
In this lab we will
be setting up our
computer
environment for
later lab
assignments.
This
will involve the use of a virtual machine, changing user accounts and customizing the computer
desktop.
Objective:
1.
Download and copy the VMs from Mydrive to your SSD external drive: Windows 10 and Kali
Linux
2.
Create custom desktops for Windows 10 and Kali Linux
Legend for Labs:
The sections of the instructions highlighted in:
Green does not require IFS Lab or VM Workstation Pro & Windows 10 - no need
to be on campus in the IFS lab
Yellow requires VM Workstation Pro & Windows 10 - no need to be on campus
in the IFS lab
Red requires the IFS Lab - you need to be on campus in the IFS lab
Windows 10 VM Credentials:
Credentials:
User: Student
Password: Ch@ng3m3!

Virtual Machine Set-up
The Lab Activities
Part 1: Operating System Installation
General Steps:
1.
Download the VMs
2.
Use 7-zip to extract the files
3.
Use VMware Workstation Pro to open and power on the VMs, plus create
custom backgrounds
Part 1 involves downloading, extracting, installing, and running the virtual machines. We
need four things, (a) software to extract the zipped virtual machine files, (b) software to
run the virtual machine, (c) the virtual machines themselves, and (d) your SSD external
hard disk.
a.
Software to extract zipped files
: The software we will be using is 7-zip, which
is available through “MyApps”,
or
you can download it from
https://www.7-
zip.org/
b.
Software to open the VMs
: The software we will be using is “VMware
Workstation Pro”.
You should receive an email from VMware IT academy – you
should create an account, request VMware License Key, and then download the
Software
. Alternatively, you access it through “MyApps”, until you get the
VMware license
c.
Virtual Machines (VMs)
: In our case, the VMs have been prepared with the
operating system pre-installed along with many of the tools you will be using
during the course. We will be using Windows 10 & Kali, they are available as
directed by the instructor - see links below.
d.
SSD External hard disk
: Recommended storage capacity: 250 - 500 GB
o
Check the file system format of your SSD.
If it is formatted in FAT32,
you’ll find that the VMs exceed the maximum size for single files, i.e., it
will not allow you to copy the Windows VM to your SSD.
You will need to
reformat your SSD to NTFS.
If you use a Mac, you’ll find that while they
can read from the NTFS file system, they can’t write to it. To be able to
write, a Mac will need an additional application
.
Steps
1.
Getting access to your external SSD hard drive and creating folders:
Plug in your external SSD hard drive into the USB port of your workstation/laptop
Use File Explorer to open a window to the external SSD hard drive
Create a new folder called
F23SEC220
on your SSD. In that folder create two (2)
sub-folders: “Win 10 VM” and “Kali VM
”
2.
Copying the virtual machines:
To begin with, you will need 2 VMs. The link to each is provided below -
You might be
asked to verify your identity with your Seneca email and password

b.
File Link Password:

c.
Save the downloaded “
w10n22.7z
” file into the “Win 10 VM” sub-folder in
the F23SEC220 folder on your SSD external hard drive

Kali 2023.3 VM
a.
Link:
https://senecafts.senecacollege.ca/link/E37fHGyAIcUTiNRlrj3us7
b.
No password is required
c.
Save the downloaded Kali Linux file into the “Kali VM” sub-folder sub-
folder in the F23SEC220 folder on your SSD external hard drive
Unzip both VM images with the 7zip application:
Open 7zip and unzip/extract the zip
files to the respective VMs folder on your SSD – you can launch 7-zip from MyApps,
https://myapps.senecacollege.ca/login
The VMs are now ready to use
3.
Importing your virtual machines into VMware Workstation Pro
a.
Open/Launch VMWare (from MyApps,
if
you do not have a licensed copy)
b.
In VMware Workstation Pro, import/open each virtual machine
o
Windows 10:
Go to the File menu and select “Open…”
Navigate to your “Win 10 VM” folder on your SSD drive and select
the “win10nov22.vmx” file, then press “Open”.
For Windows 10 credentials, check the above.
o
Kali Linux:
Go to the File menu and select “Open…”
Navigate to your “Kali VM” folder on your SSD drive and select the
“kali-linux-2023.3-vmware-amd64.vmx” file, then press “Open”.
For Kali Linux credentials, check the above.
c.
Once your virtual machines have been imported/opened you are ready to go
4.
Take the following screenshot (can use the “Snipping Tool” to do this):
o
VMware Workstation Pro window (to show that you have successfully
imported the virtual machines)
a.
Insert the screenshot into the report template under “Part 1 Operating
System Installation” and write a short description of what the screenshot
shows
Part 2: Modifying the Login Process and Updating Credentials for Windows 10
You are now ready to power on your virtual machine (VM).
Once you start up the VM
you are going to see some things that are not overly good in terms of IT security.
You are expected to work out how to do some of the next steps through looking
up manuals, doing research, etc.
Steps
1.
In VMware Workstation Pro, for Win10 VM, select “Power on this virtual machine”
(Play Virtual Machine).
o
You should see two accounts available to you: “
Student
” and “
Backup
”.
o
Username: Student, Password:Ch@ng3m3!
Kali Linux:
1.
In VMware Workstation Pro, for Kali VM, select “Power on this virtual machine”.

After login use Terminal and run the following command to change your Kali Linux
password:
passwd
Part 3: Creating Custom Desktops
In this part, I want you to create a custom desktop wallpaper for each of your VMs. This
will help me identify your computer in subsequent lab submissions. Again, I expect you
to do a bit of research on how to do some of the steps.
Steps
Windows 10 VM:
1.
Choose a desktop background and press the PrtSc button (Hint: Control Panel or
Settings)
2.
Open the application Paint and paste the Background into Paint
3.
Under the Select menu, select “Transparent selection”
4.
Create a text box and set the font size to 72. Type your full name.
5.
Use the Select tool to select the new text and cut the text.
6.
Open a new Paint Window and paste the cut-out image.
7.
Save the image as CustomDesktop<Your name>.
8.
Save a copy of this image somewhere else, in case during the semester you have
to reinstall this virtual machine you can set the same image for desktop wallpaper.
9.
In Paint, click on the file in the menu and click on “Set as Desktop Background”.
10.
It depends on your Background. You can choose Tile, Center, or Fill.
a.
Alternatively, right click on the VM Desktop--> Choose “Personalize”> Browse
to your saved custom image that has your name and choose it as the desktop
background/ wallpaper.
11.
Take a screenshot showing your Windows 10 VM custom desktop.
12.
Insert your screenshot into the report template under “Part 3 Custom
Desktop Windows 10 VM” and ensure to write a short description beneath it.
Kali Linux
o
Transfer your background image from Windows to Kali Linux.
o
Right-click on the desktop on Kali and choose Desktop Background.
o
Find your file and set it as background.
o
Take a screenshot showing your custom desktop
o
Insert your screenshot into the report template under “Part 3 Custom
Desktop Kali Linux” and ensure to write a short description beneath it.
Hint:
To create the custom background for Kali, you can drag and drop the background
file you created to
your
Desktop/Laptop. Next, open Kali Linux VM, and drag and drop
the background file from Desktop/Laptop to your Kali machine
