your vision of a healthcare leader's role in supporting data-driven decision-
making. Explain some of the challenges and ethical concerns that you believe might
exist in the use of big data for decision-making. Be specific, and provide examples.
A healthcare leader’s role in supporting data-driven decision-making is
essential to ensure quality care is provided at the most affordable cost and remain
competitive among other organizations. Data that is collected over some time is
analyzed and assists in determining the best outcomes and decisions for an
organization (Albright & Winston, 2017).
I believe it is the leader's job to ensure
roles and duties are delegated appropriately among employees, placing
responsibilities on specific positions to ensure data is appropriately collected and
assessed to enhance overall performance. A leader wants to ensure the information
obtained is helpful and effective. When data is correctly collected and managed, it
ultimately helps with improving patient outcomes, satisfaction, and quality of care.
There are various challenges and ethical concerns that exist in the use of big
data for decision-making, including privacy violations, informed consent problems,
security breach issues, potential bias in algorithms, and misuse of sensitive
information (Zwitter, 2014). There are many privacy issues for one to consider when
it comes to collecting and storing data. The concern of how the information is
collected and whether proper precautions are being followed during the collection
process is concerning when it comes to individuals’ privacy. Furthermore, if proper
precautions are not in place and followed, bias can be reflected and discrimination
among certain entities or groups can be reflected. Additionally, cyber-attacks and
data breaches are of significant concern when it comes to the data that is collected
and kept in a large database. Also, accountability can become an issue as it can be
difficult for a specific person, group, or organization to be held accountable when it
comes to making decisions once data is analyzed. Lastly, profiling and unfair
targeting can occur with the use of big data and data analytics, raising concerns
about fairness.
These ethical concerns are important for healthcare leaders and
organizations to be aware of and understand to ensure the proper precautions and
steps are in place to prevent ethical issues from occurring in the data collection and
analysis practices.
