Part I: Examine one of the modes of transportation and discuss the complexities the U.S. faces when securing it. The possibility of IED assaults is one of the main challenges in safeguarding this kind of transportation. Even though there haven't been any direct assaults on any land-based transit systems, the threat is always present. Employees of railroads are trained to identify explosive devices and to detect and recognize them. Rail sabotage is a potential problem for railway security, and staff members get in-depth training on sabotage detection and reporting procedures. Although we have not seen any instances like this, the LA Times reports that there has been a sharp rise in railway thefts. Shipping containers leaving Los Angeles have been stolen, leaving train yards covered with empty containers. According to the authors of the article, under federal law, Union Pacific and other railroad firms can hire their own police force that is certified by the state to defend tracks. This may be a good concept for other businesses to implement to decrease thefts and boost security. Part II: Explore another mode of transportation and discuss the complexities the U.S. faces when securing it. Air travel is another kind of transportation that is rife with security complications. Terrorists and lone people target aircraft, as we have seen in the past, not just for convenience but also for the possible political and media attention. Security for airlines may be challenging since every complaint and danger must be taken seriously. For instance, when one airline receives a bomb threat, all other airport operations are likewise delayed. Such threats might result in the closure of some airlines, taxiways, or even runways, which would have an impact on departures and arrivals. A non-credible, vague bomb threat was made against SkyWest's Alaska flight 3352 from San Francisco to San Diego, according to NBC San Diego. To overcome the problem, we worked along with TSA and the San Diego airport (Avitabile, 2022). Without incident, all passengers disembarked, were transported to the terminal via shuttle, and the aircraft was then cleared. Although it may seem like a straightforward activity to carry out, this kind of action involves a lot of coordination and training to ensure that staff, law enforcement, and security personnel are aware of their duties and how to carry them out. Part III: How is critical infrastructure protection important in overall transportation security? The safeguarding of critical infrastructure is essential to American transportation security operations. With 16 sectors to take into account, it is essential for each sector to operate well and continue to do so to set priorities, evaluate risks, and resolve any shortcomings. Each area, I've discovered via investigation, plays a crucial part; one cannot function without the others. Therefore, despite their apparent separation, the 16 sectors function as a complicated system and are very dependent on one another to sustain our livelihood. References:
