MIS 215 Milestone One Worksheet
Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.
To help you answer the questions below, refer to your module resources, MyMISLab, and any additional
resources you can identify. Remember that you’ll need to
use current APA guidelines for your citations
in the final project submission
. Note that
each question
in this worksheet asks you to track your
citations. It will help you avoid a last-minute hunt for resources when submitting your final project.
Refer to the
Milestone One Guidelines and Rubric
for full, detailed instructions for this activity.
Part I: Business Needs
In this section, you’ll review the scenario and assume the role of a business analyst at SNHU Clothing. In
this role, you’ll identify at least
two business needs
for SNHU Clothing. You will also describe at least two
types of data to help you address these business needs.
1.
Business Needs:
Using the information in the scenario, identify at least
two major
business
needs for SNHU Clothing. Provide a few short sentences describing each business need. What
goals are driving SNHU Clothing forward? What challenges does SNHU Clothing face as an
organization? Research what a business needs for the merger of the two companies. (Remember
that we are merging the databases.)
After reviewing the scenario, it can be determined that the two major business needs for
SNHU Clothing will be integrating the new items and customer data from the dissolved
company with minimum disruption to the customer nor the current process to track the
inventory. In addition, SNHU Clothing will need an enhancement to their current database to
be competitive with other retailers. With the expansion, SNHU will want to minimize any
delays that could impact the ease for consumers, and the efficiency on the company side.
2.
Types of Data:
Describe different data types that might be stored in client systems at SNHU
Clothing. Identify at least
two types
of data that could specifically address the business needs
you described in the first question. Be detailed about the two types of data stored. In a few short
sentences, explain why you chose this data to address the business needs.
SNHU Clothing would have a significant range of data that is currently within the client
systems. For instance, sales data, product data, customer information data, and inventory
data to name a few. The data sets that will be beneficial to addressing the business needs
would be customer information data and inventory data. Both will be vital in providing the
necessary information needed to ensure merging both databases will as seamless as possible
with updating the necessary fields.
Part II: Client Systems
In this section, you’ll describe the client systems used by SNHU Clothing. Also, you will identify how they
relate.
3.
Client Systems:
SNHU Clothing has identified one client system. What additional client system
can you refer to that you have learned from this week’s text materials? How do you distinguish
between the systems? How do these client systems reflect SNHU Clothing’s business needs?
To keep up with the increase in productivity that will be needed and the on-the-go business
world an alternative like ORACLE may be a better option than Microsoft Access. Having the
ability to advance to another client system allows for more data to be captured as the systems
are larger and due to the cloud capabilities, the data can be accessed from anywhere. With
ORACLE, it can self-serve and reduce the amount the end user will have to do and minimize
data errors.
4.
Relationships:
Describe how the two client systems relate to one another. Consider the systems’
differences and similarities when describing the relationships.
SNHU Clothing has provided one,
but this system is not always the best.
Why?
What did you select in the previous question?
How will you suggest merging these two different types of client systems?
You may use a combination of text and visuals, such as a flowchart, to show the relationships.
Both Microsoft Access and ORACLE are utilized for storing information, however, there are
some key differences. Microsoft Access is a simple DBMS that manages and stores data,
however, it is ideal for smaller businesses. With ORACLE being server or cloud based, it can be
accessed by multiple users. ORACLE storage capabilities are larger the access allowing more
data to be captured. To merge the two different clients systems, SQL will need to be used
when creating the DBMS.
Part III: Accessing Data
In this section, you’ll give details about what is considered when accessing the data you’d need to
address SNHU Clothing’s business needs.
5.
Currently Available:
Explain how you can find out exactly what information is currently available
at SNHU Clothing. What additional steps might you take as a database designer/administrator?
Who would you interact with, and why?
In order to find what is currently available at SNHU Clothing, one would need to review and
assess the database of the company. With doing that, I will be able to gather what er currently
have, get an idea of what is needed and plan from there. With being the database designer, it
would be ideal to gather input for end-users to ensure I am developing what they need and
have a clear understanding of the goal and how the database should operate.
6.
Data Storage:
Describe where and how SNHU Clothing is currently storing data. Do you think the
current data storage location and approach are efficient? Explain why or why not.
SNHU Clothing currently only has one location with ten employees resulting in having the
data currently stored on a server on-site. Due to the company being small, it makes sense to
have the data stored that way, however, with the goal of growing this is not the most efficient
data storage option. Implementing the use of a cloud-based server will be most efficient and
effective to ensure the company continues to grow and meet product demand.
7.
Tools
: Identify what types of tools you might use to collect the types of data you need to address
SNHU Clothing’s business needs. Explain why these types of tools are appropriate. Per the labs in
MyMISLab this week, what tools did you discover that would work to obtain data? Simply stating
reports is not sufficient.
Due to Microsoft Access currently being used, it would be best to continue using Microsoft
applications to collect and extract the necessary data to address SNHU Clothing’s business
needs. To aid in explaining and display the information to the current staff in a manner they
would understand, it will be ideal to utilize tools such as PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
8.
Data Security and Integrity
: Describe why data security matters to the stakeholders at SNHU
Clothing. After reviewing your labs/videos, what can you provide for rationale? Include details.
Data security matters greatly to stakeholders as they invest in SNHU clothing and must protect
their investments. With SNHU Clothing increasing its clientele, it is a priority to protect against
data breaches or the misuse of client information. If a data breach were to occur, it could
damage the business and the stakeholders. A data breach can have a significant financial
impact.
