On page 496 in your book - Read 17.1 and answer the following questions:
1. What should Jonathan do when he finds that Mary is not performing adequately
on the tasks he has delegated to her?
Jonathan should talk with Mary in private and establish what is/are the reason/s for why
Mary isn’t performing adequately. Maybe Mary doesn’t understand what is required from
her or maybe she doesn’t have time, then pointers would be useful or if Mary has no
time for overseeing ROI then the task should be delegated to someone else. However, if
Mary has the time but just isn’t getting it done then Mary should be reprimanded.
2. What other options are there for Jonathan other than delegating some of his
tasks to others to reduce the number of hours he is working each day?
I think Jonathan could try and come up with a better time management system so that it
doesn’t take him so long to get things done.
3. It is important for Jonathan to help Mary be successful. What can Jonathan do to
help ensure that Mary is successful in her new responsibilities?
First, Jonathan should establish if Mary knows what falls under “oversight of ROI” and
make sure that Mary has the right tools and guidance to be successful. Another useful
thing would be to have Mary “shadow” Jonathan for some time when overseeing ROI
department and give Mary any pointers, make Mary aware of specific responsibilities
and exactly what is expected of her. Also, Jonathan should have an open-door policy so
that Mary feels comfortable coming to Jonathan and asking additional questions about
overseeing ROI.
