1. Data – anything translated into a form that can be used for movement or processing
2. Database – anything that stores data and also contains information about the relation of said
data to each other
3. Database Management System (DBMS) – software that translates a request for store data
4. Database Application Programs – provides a way for data to be used by end users or higher-
level applications
5. Data Independence – ability to modify the scheme at one level of the data base without
altering another
6. Data Security – protects data from unwanted access or corruption and example would be
encryption or requiring a login
7. Database Integrity – overall completeness, accuracy and consistency of data over its entire
life
8. Database View – subset of a database and is based on a query that runs on one or more
database tables
9. Evolution of relational databases as a tool for information management – a relational
database allows the user to organize data, this is very helpful because it allows an automatic
sorting instead of you having to look through all the take and extract what you need.
1. What is concurrency control and why does a DBMS need a concurrency control facility?
Concurrency control is the management procedure that is required for controlling concurrent
execution of the operations that take place on a database. It allows for multiple users to use
the database at once. This is especially important in workplace that require several members
to access the data and if they have multiple locations.
2. Why is learning about database and its use important to you? Which database is your
information stored in (list at least two)? Are they concurrency control databases?
I use them for accessing course material and student data for the classes I teach. Understand
databases will help me improve other processes as well, the Air Force still does a lot of things
the old way and database can help modernized how we collect and use the data we collect.
Microsoft Access and Oracle, they are both concurrency-controlled databases.
3. Does the Classroom for this course demonstrate a need for Concurrency Control? Explain.
Yes, all of the student and the instructor would need to access course materials possibly at the
same time.
