IT infrastructure- Platform for supporting all information systems in the business Computer hardware: Computer hardware refers to the physical components of information technology. This includes all the tangible devices and equipment used to process, store, and transmit data. • Computer software: Computer software comprises the programs and applications that run on computer hardware. • Data management technology: Data management technology is crucial for storing, organizing, and securing an organization's data. • Networking and telecommunications technology: Networking and telecommunications technology enable communication and data exchange within and outside the organization. • Technology services: Technology services encompass the support and management of the IT infrastructure. 2. • Personal computers and mobile devices: PCs are used by individuals for everyday computing. Mobile devices are portable gadgets for communication and productivity, including smartphones and tablets. • Workstations: High-performance computers designed for specialized tasks like 3D modeling and graphic design. • Servers: Computers that provide network services, such as web hosting and data storage. • Mainframes: Large, dependable computers primarily used for heavy data processing in enterprises. • Supercomputers: Ultra-powerful machines for demanding tasks like scientific simulations and weather forecasting. • Grid computing: A network of distributed computers working together on complex projects and data analysis.
3. Mobile Digital Platform: A mobile digital platform refers to the combination of hardware and software that enables the operation of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It includes the operating system, applications, and services that provide functionality on these devices. BYOD: BYOD is a policy that allows employees to use their personal smartphones, laptops, or tablets for work purposes. It can improve flexibility but also presents security and management challenges for IT departments. Nanotechnology: Nanotechnology involves manipulating and engineering materials and devices at the nanoscale, typically at the level of individual molecules or atoms. It has applications in various fields, including medicine, electronics, and materials science. Grid Computing: Grid computing is a distributed computing model that connects multiple computers to work together on a common task. It is often used for large-scale data analysis, scientific research, and other compute-intensive projects. Cloud Computing: Cloud computing involves accessing and storing data, applications, and services over the internet instead of on local hardware. It offers scalability, cost-efficiency, and flexibility for businesses. Virtualization: Virtualization is the process of creating virtual instances of physical resources, such as servers, storage, or networks. It allows multiple virtual environments to run on a single physical infrastructure, improving resource utilization and management. Green Computing: Green computing, also known as eco-friendly computing, focuses on reducing the environmental impact of IT systems and operations. It includes practices like energy-efficient hardware, server consolidation, and responsible disposal of electronic waste. Multicore Processing: Multicore processing involves integrating multiple processor cores on a single chip. This technology enhances computing performance by allowing multiple tasks to be processed simultaneously, improving overall system speed and efficiency.
4. Application Software vs. System Software Application Software: User-facing, performs specific tasks. Examples: Word processors, web browsers, games. System Software: Operates in the background, manages hardware. Examples: Operating system, device drivers, firmware. Role of the Operating System (OS) Manages processes, memory, files, devices. Provides user interface, security, networking. Major PC and Server Operating Systems PC Operating Systems: Windows: Widely used, GUI, supports various software and hardware. macOS: User-friendly, for Macintosh computers. Linux (Open Source): Flexible, secure, open-source, various distributions. Server Operating Systems UNIX: Family of multi-user, multitasking OS. Linux (Open Source): Stable, secure, open-source, many distributions. Windows Server: Enterprise-level, with server-specific features. 5. In my eco-conscious outdoor adventure business, I envision using various types of computers to efficiently manage operations. First and foremost, a reservation and scheduling system would be paramount. This system would streamline inquiries and trip date management, ensuring a seamless booking process for our clients. Moreover, it would enable us to maintain a meticulously organized calendar of adventures, allowing us to plan and execute trips with precision. Additionally, a robust supply management system would be instrumental in our operations. Computers would play a vital role in guaranteeing a consistent stock of gear and tools, preventing interruptions due to a lack of essential materials during trips. This automated system would ensure that our equipment is always in top condition and readily available for our clients. Furthermore, a streamlined statement and assessment process, facilitated by computers, would be crucial. This process would allow us to continuously improve our services based on feedback, ensuring that we meet or exceed our customers' expectations.
