HW 5 - Project Network, Precedence, CPM, Float, and creating a GANTT Chart
1) Describe Forward pass
Ans) Forward pass is a technique where we move forward through the network diagram to find the critical path and find the early start and finish
time of a project. 2) Describe Backward pass
Ans) Backward Pass is a technique where we move backwards through the
network diagram to find the critical path and find the late start and late finish value of a project
3) Describe Critical Path
Ans) Critical Path lists all the required activities that need to be completed
in order for the project to be completed. This is the longest path from start
to end which indicates the minimum time needed for a project to be completed. 4) What is one major weakness of focusing on the Critical Path?
Ans) There can be high-float tasks that are not present on the critical path
and if we focus only on the critical path we miss out on the high-float tasks and this can cause project delays due to not prioritising the tasks properly
5) What is Float (Slack) and how can a project manager use it?
Ans) Float is the amount of time in which a task in a network diagram can be delayed without impacting the next task and the project deadline. Float
helps project managers focus and prioritise tasks efficiently. Float can be used by the project manager to monitor the progress of the project.
6)
ACTIVITY
create a GANTT chart in MSProject for the tree house example shown in the videos,
Ensure each node from the Network Diagram has a line in MSProject
You may have additional lines for subsection headers or any milestones
Include all appropriate precedence and estimated times as shown.
Use your birthday as the start date,
Assume 8 hour work days, and you decide whether or not to schedule work on Saturday and/or Sunday
Include one milestone for when both Tree Prep and Tool Purchasing have both been completed
Since different people will do different parts, you decide to break the project into subsections of
o
Preparations and Design
o
Purchasing
o
Building
o
Installation
Submit a screenshot of the project tasks and GANTT
Ans) I took Sunday as a holiday and my working days were from Monday to Saturday.
7) There is some learning curve in using tools such as MSProject, for even a simple project like the tree house. What was the most difficult part for you and how did you overcome it?
Ans) The difficult task was to understand how a smart sheet works while creating a GANTT chart. Initially, I was unable to understand how to get timestamps along with the date in smart sheets but later from research, I understood that smart sheets do not support that feature. I also found it difficult to add a predecessor and how to set up the task sheet so that the smart sheet could calculate the time taken for each task automatically. YouTube helped me understand how to create a GANNT chart using Smartsheet. Below is the link to the YouTube video which I referred to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwkhNM0IJaY
8) Take some time to look at your GANTT Chart and consider the tasks.
Can you spot any float in the GANTT?
Ans) There is float in the network between the tasks ‘prepare tress’ and ‘purchasing interior items’ this could be seen In the GANTT chart where the critical path is not highlighted
How is the Critical Path highlighted?
Ans) The critical path is highlighted in red
