Module 6: Risk Assessment Assignment Describe an action/process that would be done in a clinical laboratory and use the 5 steps for risk assessment to ensure that safety precautions are being addressed in that process.
-
A lab has purchased a new analyzer so that they could proceed with COVID19 PCR testing. The lab did not have any sufficient space to put the analyzer in, so a storage area was repurposed and allocated to the lab for their use. However, the storage area did not have negative pressure and there was no door separating it from the hallway leading to the break room. The staff working this analyzer had to vortex the samples, but there was no Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC). The resolution was that the tech could vortex the samples while wearing PPE and a protective shield until a door was installed and negative pressure was
established. Five Step Risk Assessment:
1.
Identify the risks and hazards
– there was not enough space in the lab to put the new COVID-19 PCR analyzer in, so a storage area was repurposed for the lab. There was also no biological safety cabinet due to the lack of space.
2.
Evaluate the risk
– there is a risk of lab employees being exposed to COVID-19, that is highly likely
, which could require medical attention or hospitalization. 3.
Rank in order of criticality
– exposure to COVID-19 and requiring hospitalization and lost time is a moderate
consequence.
4.
Determine actions that can be taken to mitigate the risk
– lab techs using the PCR machine must wear PPE and a face shield while vortexing the samples to minimize exposure to the virus, since there is no negative pressure in the storage
area where the analyzer is placed and there was no biological safety cabinet. 5.
Implement the risk controls and continually monitor the process
– the lab will continue to implement these controls until a door is installed and negative pressure can be established.
