Question 1: Analytics or Intuition Category 1: Operations and Production (Analytics) My job used to be on 4/10’s collecting various weather datasets. We soon changed to 5/8’s to increase the probability of getting variable weather data by one day. This caused a 20 percent increase on collectable days because we increased the operating envelope. Even though each day less hour were worked there was still an increase in getting different types of data with adding and additional operating day. Category 2: Product Research and Development (Intuition) A program was created to research snow. The company asked employees where they would like to go to research snow. The company picked the highest place that employees had recommended to research snow. They used a convenience sample rather than probability sample. In addition, they choose to only use one primary data source and did not use a secondary data source to analyze historic snow downfall. Category 3: Financial Management and Budgeting (Analytics) Toward the end of last year my company initiated a hiring freeze because they were projected to see less profit. With that financial trend still going down at the beginning of this year they laid of 18,000 employees in hopes of plateauing in profitability and cutting overhead costs. Question 2: Obstacles to Analytics Obstacle 1: Lack of understanding how to use analytics to improve the business Explanation: In this instance the forecast data my company choose to collect was bad. When looking for places to collect heavy rain data my company used historic trend analysis and forecasting which showed where it rained the most days out of the previous year. They then deployed crews to go collect in
these areas. They ended up having to send people to a new location because the 1 st one did rain often but did not rain at a high enough volume each day. Recommendation: My company needed to use data on places that had the most rain per day not where it rained the most days. 1 inch of rain every day is not a lot compared to 10 inches of rain every other day. They used the wrong method to try to identify business problems that could have been solved with the right analytics and correct choice modeling. Obstacle 2: General Management Explanation: My company spends time in too many meetings. There are multiple projects going on at one time and mangers do not know how to properly time manage. There is a lack of understanding of management bandwidth due to competing priorities. Recommend: Managers need to reduce time to value and tactically overcome these significant impediments to the organization. Analytics-driven management would be to only go to meeting that were of the highest value. Obstacle 3: Existing culture does not encourage sharing information Explanation: My company does not facilitate identification of analytical business needs. Neither is there a standardized reporting on current business processes. Most projects are considered confidential in my company even if you are in the same organization or on the same team. There are a lot of employees so some people may be working on the same thing without knowing. There is ineffective data governance within my company. They are not transparent about the analytic capabilities that are already in place and rather than nurture that they are ambiguous and make everyone start as if there is no data.
Recommendation: Researching items multiple times is redundant. If my company were to share more privileged information with each other a lot of time could be saved and two people wouldn’t be doing the same work. They lack the understanding of how to leverage analytical data for overall business value. They are not effective at sharing information and data driven insights.
